Pick up the Phone

woman-on-phoneWe get so caught up in our lives that the days, weeks and months roll by like highway mileage markers, each one blurring seamlessly into the next. Zip, there goes another one.

How many months has it been since you were going to get together with that friend you haven’t seen since forever? Pick up the phone.

If someone you loved met an untimely end tomorrow, would there be anything left unsaid between you? Find the courage to say it now.

Sure, I know. There’s always time. Until there isn’t.

Take five minutes . . . right now . . . to write down the names of friends or loved ones you haven’t talked to or seen in a while. Then commit to giving them a call. Or stopping by to say hello. Or sending an e-mail to let them know you love them. Put these items at the top of your To Do list—and don’t let another day go by without checking them off.

I’m certainly not the only one to encourage people to express their appreciation. Stu Greenbaum of San Diego created a website that urges people to take the “Just Five Minutes” challenge:

All you need to do is to make a commitment to having a five-minute, heart-to-heart conversation with the most important person in your life—son, daughter, husband, wife, mother, father, girlfriend, boyfriend or best friend—during which you will tell them:

• How much you appreciate them
• What you admire about them
• Your favorite memories with them
• What you have learned form them
• How they have changed your life

Life gets more peaceful and more fulfilling when you escape from Planet You and devote more time to interacting with others in meaningful ways. For a great reminder of what truly matters, keep the following quote close at hand:

If you had an hour to live and could only make one phone call, who would you call, what would you say, and why are you waiting?
Stephen Levine
