Charice—Her Interviews

Charice was interviewed by Korina Sanchez on Rated K, a Sunday night magazine news show on the ABS-CBN network. This video, posted May 30, 2008, offers a nice overview of Charice’s life and career as well as an insightful interview.

And here is a six-part mini-series of Charice’s life produced for Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK), the longest running drama anthology on Philippine television. MMK (translated as Will You Ever Remember) programs are based on real-life stories.

The mini-series is hosted and narrated by actress and television executive Charo Santos, who was named president of the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation on March 3, 2008.

Another little girl plays Charice as a young child, then she takes over and plays herself as the older Charice. She does a wonderful job of acting while recreating the most dramatic events of her life. Zsazsa Padilla portrays Raquel, Charice’s mother.

This hour-long presentation is very meaningful to Charice because she is extremely proud of her Filipino heritage and wants everyone in the Philippines to remember where she came from and how she got to where she is today.

Charice has come a long way from her humble beginnings—a life of poverty, malnutrition, and an absentee father who had abused her mother. Fortunately, she is blessed with a mother who has always believed in her and loves her dearly.

After this program aired, Charice was selected to sing MMK’s theme song, Maalaala Mo Kaya (Remember Me), a traditional Tagalog ballad.

But wait, there’s more! Here is a three-part interview with Charice’s mom, Raquel, on Wonder Mom, a Saturday morning parenting show in the Philippines. Raquel sacrificed everything for her two kids—Charice and her brother Carl—and with her love and guidance, Charice is well positioned to handle the fame and financial abundance that has already begun to come her way.

After Charice’s epic performance on Star King, a South Korean talent show, on October 13, 2007, the Koreans knew that Charice was destined for superstardom. Here is a documentary of Charice’s rise to stardom that was shot in early January 2008 and aired on February 27, 2008 on KBS, South Korea’s premier public broadcaster.

In tribute to Charcie’s beloved mother, Raquel, two Charice super-fans put together montages for Mother’s Day, 2009. Here is Loel Fortugalez’s video tribute:

And here is jimfan155’s slideshow tribute, using Charice’s rendition of Always You as a backdrop.

  1. StarMars Says:

I watched all the videos here. :)

  2. Phil Bolsta Says:

You rock, StarMars! Hope you enjoyed the vids!

  3. FLTom Says:

Phil thanks for a wonderfully informative website. I’ve spent several pleasurable hours here learning more about Charice, an artist who has captivated my heart like no other has ever in my life. Since I first heard her perform with David Foster on his special, not a day has gone by when I haven’t spent some time listening to her and learning more about her. What an angel she is, and what a gift to us all.

Since you make your living as a writer, journalist and, I assume at least to a certain extent, investigative reporter, and since you have such a pronounced interest in Charice, it seems reasonable to me that you’ve tried to get information about her father. Do you know anything about him? Is he living? Is he healthy? Of course we all know about the incident that broke up his marriage to Raquel. And there’s a rumor that he has an addiction issue. But who knows what to believe?

Obviously this must be a very touchy subject for Ming, Raquel and Carl, as it would be for anyone with an absentee parent. And although it’s really nobody’s business how these private family relationships are handled, I worry for Charice that in an age of instant global media some tabloid bottom feeder somewhere will find her father, interview him, and somehow make a scandal out of it. So it would be nice to know if Pop is a creep or an OK guy, a wacko or at least reasonably stable and normal.

How any man with so wonderful and precious a daughter could bear to stay out of her life is a mystery that I will never, ever understand. That’s what makes me worry the guy is not all there in the head.

I mention all this to you only because I’m sure you’ve already thought about it yourself. If you haven’t actively investigated these questions, perhaps you should think about doing so, since you have the right skills and might be able to acquire the necessary access.

I’m glad you have been able to use my blog as a resource to learn more about Charice, FLTom. You are not alone as far as having a daily Charice fix!

I actually know nothing about her father and don’t have any interest in pursuing that. Like you, I can’t understand how he (or any father, for that matter) can drop out of his children’s lives. Let’s hope that if anything does happen on this front, that it’s positive.

  5. FLTom Says:

Thanks for such a timely reply. Like you, I hope that if anything new develops between Charice’s Dad and his kids and ex-wife, it’s positive and healing.

  6. Phil Bolsta Says:

    Yes, let’s hope for that.

  7. Max Says:

    Phil,

I just watched her life story videos again for the umpteenth time. This time I focused on Charice’s acting ability. She takes on acting as easily as she takes on a song. She is just completely amazing. I think we are Chaddicted.

  8. Phil Bolsta Says:

Thanks, Max. I was also impressed by Charice’s natural ease at acting. Playing yourself is a lot tougher than it looks, and she did an outstanding job.

  9. Yin Says:

Thanks for all your work Phil. Now, I feel like I know this girl from long time ago. Well, I think other people already said what I want to say. I just can’t believe she were critized as “No look”! I think she is very down to earth. She looks VERY REAL! She doesn’t look like other teen stars who were raised from rich family.
But, there is something I would like to let Charice know though. I hope she treasure what she has and I hope that her relationship with her mother will maintain like this no matter what happen.
    All the best, Charice.

  10. Phil Bolsta Says:

You’re very welcome, Yin. I’m glad my posts helped you get to know Charice better. I agree with you that she is very, very real and down to earth. That’s why Charice is so beloved by so many. I don’t think we have to worry that Charice will let her success go to her head. She’s got a lot of level-headed, smart mentors looking after her.
