Charice—Her Interviews

Charice’s first appearance on Star King, a South Korean talent show, took place on October 13, 2007. It was here that she received her very first standing ovation. An analysis of Charice’s star-making performance can be found on my primary Charice post.

AND I AM TELLING YOU I’M NOT GOING

Following that song, Charice picked Kyu Hyun, a member of the very popular Korean boy band Super Junior, from among the other performers  to sing with. Here is their sweet duet.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD

Charice’s returned to Star King on December 29, 2007 after Koreans voted her the Most Requested Foreign Act of 2007. She received standing ovations after her first song and again after a duet with Lena Park (a.k.a. Park Jung-hyun), widely regarded as Korea’s best R&B singer. In between, she also performed a brief a cappella version of Beyonce’s Listen after the host asked her to sing a ballad.

I WILL SURVIVE
Brief a cappella version of LISTEN
Duet of I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

Here is Charice singing at the Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) Awards on April 26, 2008, in Los Angeles. Her second song is the theme song of TFC (The Filipino Channel).

I HAVE NOTHING

LIPAD NG PANGARAP
(SOARING OF DREAMS)

YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE

Charice performed at the opening of the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Hotel and Casino in Connecticut on May 17, 2008 with David Foster,  Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Josh Groban and many more stars. Charice was the only performer to receive a standing ovation that night. No video footage is available but here is a slideshow consisting of photos from that night, backed by Charice singing I Believe.

Charice thrilled her fans with three songs at the culmination of the Philippine Independence Day Parade in New York City on June 1, 2008.

ONE MOMENT IN TIME

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

Before Charice could sing her third and final song, she was forced to improvise. For the full story, I yield the floor to super-fan Loel Fortugaleza, who filmed the video that follows.

Charice can handle technical difficulties during a performance very gracefully. Her performance here shows you how deft she is. The operator had trouble playing the music for her third song and it took them several minutes to find an alternate song. In the meantime, she continued entertaing the audience. You can hear the comments from the audience saying “She can adlib,” and “She’s got showmanship.”

IKAW ANG LAHAT SA AKIN
(YOU ARE EVERYTHING TO ME)

(Click here to see how Charice flawlessly handled a musical glitch during a performance on UKG on July 11, 2008.)

Here’s what happened after she finished the above song, acccording to Charice super-fan jimfan155:

At the end of the third song, she turned around and appeared to request to sing a fourth song but was turned down. After she went into a tent for a few minutes, she came out to greet her fans, sign autographs and take pictures. She would have stayed longer to meet everyone but was ushered along; she looked genuinely sad to be rushed to her car.  She is so warm and friendly, a sincere star who cares.

If you think this looks like bedlam, just wait—when superstardom arrives for The Most Talented Girl In The World, she will be faced with crowds a hundred times as large. Such is the price of fame. Comedian Steve Martin wrote in his autobiography that at the height of his fame, he was forced to live in isolation, whisked away to lonely hotel rooms every night, because everyone wanted a piece of him. Let us hope and pray that Charice’s fans keep a respectful distance so that she doesn’t have to be accompanied by security guards everywhere she goes.

Charice met another one of her heroes—opera star Andrea Bocelli—at the concert Hit Man: David Foster and Friendsnow available on CD and DVD—at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on May 23, 2008. Here’s how Bocelli tells the story in the following video:

I was in a TV program in America participated in by some of the greatest American (singing) artists. Someone approached me in my dressing room and said, “Look, you should come and listen to an extraordinary voice, a young girl with an incredible voice.” I went to check and at the end of the song, there was an incredible standing ovation. I went to congratulate her. She thanked me and candidly told me, “I would like to sing with you.” I asked her, “What song would you like to sing with me?” She responded, “The Prayer.”

Not long after, Charice received a phone call form Bocelli, who asked her to be a guest at his birthday concert, The Cinema Tribute, in Tuscany, Italy, on July 20, 2008. The phone call, and a surprised and thrilled Charice, was shown on the September 9, 2008 episode of Oprah, which recapped Charice’s young career. (Watch that Oprah episode—PART 2 OF 4—on The Soaring Spirit of Charice Pempengco.)

That segment on the Oprah show also showed Charice riding in the back seat of a car, with Bocelli sitting up front in the passenger seat. Charice whispered to the camera:

I can’t speak. I’m shocked. I can’t believe I’m here in Andrea Bocelli’s car.

Cut to Charice sitting outside at a table:

That’s a dream come true for me. I really love Andrea Bocelli because he’s my idol. When I was younger, I’m always drawing some things like me singing with Celine and me singing with Mr. Andrea Bocelli. So that’s why I can’t believe I’m here right now in Tuscany and I’m going to sing with him.

Oprah’s voiceover continued:

More than 8,000 people gathered here in the Tuscan countryside for an exclusive concert. They sing The Prayer, a song that holds special meaning for Charice.

Back to Charice sitting at the table:

I think that God is always listening to all my prayers, and I have so many dreams in my life. That’s why I’m always praying that someday I’m going to achieve all my dreams.

Here is Charice and Andrea Bcelli’s stirring duet in Tuscany. At the end of his introduction, after he mentioned that Charice had wanted to sing The Prayer with him, Bocelli said:

Well, mission accomplished! Ladies and gentlemen, Charice is only sixteen years old. For the rest, you yourselves make the judgment.

THE PRAYER

Two-and-a-half months later, in an interview on Wonder Mom, a Saturday morning parenting show in the Philippines. Charice shared what she thinking during that magical performance:

I felt really happy when I was onstage. I was hugging him, and I thought, Gosh, I’m hugging Andrea Bocelli. I couldn’t believe it. I used to watch him onstage hugging Celine Dion, and I thought, Oh, my God, me too!

Charice performed four songs at the U.S.-Philippines Expo in the Pomona Fairplex, home of the Los Angeles County Fair, on Saturday, August 9, 2008, and five more songs on Sunday, August 10. Ruben S. Panopio, Jr. started the annual expo in 1993 to unite Filipino-Americans in one grand event through food, entertainment, media and culture. The expo offered hundreds of commercial product booths, hours of entertainment, and most importantly, a sense of community for thousands of proud Filipino-Americans.

Charice, kicking things off no Saturday with a Whitney Houston song, thrills the crowd by jumping off the stage and singing her way through the crowd. Charice is so tiny that she doesn’t show up on camera for most of the song—you just hear her powerful voice and watch the wave of cameras following her!

I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY

Here is the same performance from a camera angle down on the floor so you can catch a few glimpses of Charice interacting with her fans, hugging some of them and posing for pictures while she’s singing.

I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY

Next up, a heartfelt and teary-eyed rendition of a classic Filipino ballad. Before she begins singing, Charice tells the audience that she is happy and thankful, and that it’s her dream to be recognized by Filipino people for her talent.

THEME FROM MAALAALA MO KAYA
(REMEMBER ME)

Charice then sings the song she performed with Andrea Bocelli in Tuscany, Italy, three weeks earlier. Her duet partner’s name is Brian.

THE PRAYER

Charice closes her Saturday set with a powerful performance of a Beyonce song.

LISTEN

Charice opened her Sunday set at the U.S.-Philippines Expo with a “personal power” anthem first popularized by Gloria Gaynor in 1979.

I WILL SURVIVE

Charice was then joined on stage by the mysterious Brian to reprise their duet from the day before.

THE PRAYER

Next up, the classic love song penned by Dolly Parton in 1973.

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

Charice then interpreted a song that Diana Ross released in 1991.

WHEN YOU TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME

Charice closed out the weekend with a Tagalog song.

IKAW ANG LAHAT SA AKIN
(YOU ARE EVERYTHING TO ME)

Edmonton, the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, hosted the 22nd annual David Foster and Friends Gala at the Winspear Centre on September 12-13, 2008. This event for the David Foster Foundation featured live musical performances in order to raise money and awareness to support families of children requiring organ transplants. Charice performed four songs on Saturday, September 13.

BODYGUARD MEDLEY: I HAVE NOTHING and I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

I AM TELLING YOU I’M NOT GOING

Charice sang the following duet with Tyler Hamilton, a former contestant on Canadian Idol.

THE PRAYER

I WILL SURVIVE

And here is a behind-the-scenes look at rehearsals for the above performance as well as some quick-hit interviews, courtesy of CTV Edmonton, a local TV station.

Here is Charice singing on the Good Housekeeping showboat float during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 27, 2008.

BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME

On November 29, 2008, Charice performed a number of songs during a special San Diego Live edition of Wowowee, a noon-time variety and game show broadcast by ABS-CBN. What is a Philippine show doing in San Diego? Wowowee is shown worldwide through TFC (The Filipino Channel). The show travels to different cities around the world so TFC subscribers can experience live shows. It’s TCF’s way of thanking its viewers all across the world. Charice kicks things off with a stirring rendition of a Heart classic and then sings a medley of hits by Sharon Cuneta.

ALONE and SHARON CUNETA MEDLEY

Next up is a Celine Dion standard.

TO LOVE YOU MORE

Charice closes by singing a duet with Filipino-American Billy Crawford on a Rihanna megahit.

UMBRELLA

Accompanied by David Foster, Charice performed at the FIDF (Friends of the Israel Defense Forces) Gala at the Beverly Hilton on December 11, 2008. The gala honored thirty male and female soldiers, each of whom had lost a relative in combat or through terrorist attacks. For more information, read this article on charicemania.com. Charice kicked things off with the medley she sang at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on May 23, 2008.

BODYGUARD MEDLEY: I HAVE NOTHING and
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

Just for fun, David encouraged her to reprise her bust-a-move rendition of a Michael Jackson smash that she first performed October 25, 2008 at the Carousel of Hope Ball, an annual charity event in Beverly Hills, California.

BILLIE JEAN

After Charice saluted the crowd in Hebrew (you read that right!), David said to Charice, “Let’s do the song that we’re recording right now.”

I WILL SURVIVE

And now for a bonus! Here’s a song co-written and originally performed by Mariah Carey. This is an audio recording only, accompanied by stills from Charice’s career.

CAN’T TAKE THAT AWAY (MARIAH’S THEME)

What? You want another bonus? Your wish is my command! Here is an unfinished demo Charice sang for an American songwriter who went to Star Records looking for her. But for Charice addicts, a test recording with no bridge or final chorus is better than no recording at all! The following video consists only of the audio recorded at the Star Records studio and a static photo of Charice taken at the opening of the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Hotel and Casino in Connecticut on May 17, 2008.

WHAT IS MY WORLD WITHOUT YOU

Ookay, okay, I know your appetite for bonuses is insatiable! So here is Charice singing a Barry Manilow medley, which she recorded at home. She holds one note at the end for so long that I was gasping for breath! Click on the audio player below to hear it.

WOW that Barry Manilow track is priceless! You were right about that last note she held for such a long time and still had some more power left in her to belt the last word…. she should be singing this medley and stop the whitney medley …this is far far more awesome! Incredible! i am floored by that last note… wow! I was not going to listen actually but when i read your amazement about how she held one note so long it left you gasping i became curious and listened….i am so so soooooooooo glad i did!
