Fear Takes Flight

I love earth angel stories! This one, by Vincent Yeo of Pasadena, California, appeared in the January 2008 issue of Guideposts.

I’m a motivational speaker, flying all over the country giving speeches. But for years I had a terrible fear of flying. My hands would sweat and my pulse race the minute I reached the jet way. This is irrational, I’d tell myself, but it made no difference. The fear was overwhelming. I’d grip the armrests till my knuckles turned white. Takeoffs and landings were particularly hard. The irony of giving speeches to help other people yet having such a crippling fear myself wasn’t lost on me.

I began to pray every Sunday, asking God to remove the fear. But months passed and my fear remained. Then one Sunday, kneeling beside my wife in church, I looked up. At that moment, a man stood several rows in front of me. He turned and smiled at me, then walked up the aisle, stopped at my pew and handed me what appeared to be a business card, then he continued up the aisle. How odd, I thought. I finished my prayer, stood and glanced at the card.

“Dear God,” it read, “please protect me while I travel to do the work you’ve given me and bring me back home safely to my family.” I turned to look for the man, but he was gone.

“Maybe he was an angel,” my wife said. I wasn’t sure. But I tucked the card into my wallet.

On my next flight I pulled out the card and read it while waiting for takeoff. Though my pulse raced, I could feel my nerves calm. On the following flight, I felt less anxious. Finally, one day, without being aware of it, my fear left. No more gripping the armrests or sweaty palms.

The card is dog-eared and worn now, but it’s still in my wallet. I don’t know what ever happened to the man who gave it to me. But I know that that Sunday he was an answer to my prayer.

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

SiSe_fullcover_final.inddPhil is also the author of Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, a collection of 45 inspiring, life-changing stories from prominent authors and thought leaders he interviewed.
