A Doctor With a Heart, a Prom to Remember

Dr. Mike makes good on his ten-year-old promise to Stephanie

Right before eight-year-old Stephanie Pentiuk’s heart transplant surgery at the Mayo Clinic, she looked up at pediatric cardiologist Dr. Mike Ackerman and asked, “Am I going to live, Dr. Mike?” He smiled and said, “Of course you are, Stephanie. And not only are you going to survive this transplant, I’ll be dancing with you at your prom.”

Fast-forward ten years, to April 25, 2009. Stephanie, who lived in Leland, Michigan, had forgotten that promise but her parents hadn’t. They called Dr. Mike and invited him to her senior prom as a surprise for their daughter, who just a year ago had also received a kidney transplant from her mother. When Dr. Mike tapped an unsuspecting Stephanie on the shoulder and asked, ‘May I have this dance,” she tearfully accepted.

What a tender and wonderful moment!
