Spiritual Harmonizers—Special Delivery

When these seven postal workers from Richmond, Virgina took the stage on America’s Got Talent on July 14, 2009, I expected them to be good. Then the lead singer opened his mouth . . . WOW! I was mesmerized. After the performance, Piers Morgan, one of the judges, compared him to “a young Stevie Wonder.” I love seeing ordinary people display extraordinary talent and get a real, life-changing shot at well-deserved stardom. Not only that, it’s fun to see a group of friends like this having so much fun together!

Here is an article about the group from the Richmond Times-Dispatch by Tammie Smith:

Local current and former Postal Service workers who sing on the side as a group got their big break Tuesday on “America’s Got Talent,” the top-rated summer variety show.

“I’ve heard from people I haven’t heard from in four or five years, people from other states,” said James “Leon” Lewis, founder of the 10-year-old group called the Spiritual Harmonizers.

“People were calling me until 4 and 5 o’clock this morning,” Lewis said yesterday.
The group, which sings around town at weddings, festivals and other events, got high marks from the judges and audience Tuesday. It was sent on to the next round of competition.

On the show, the group sang part of the Boyz II Men hit “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.”

Members of the Spiritual Harmonizers range in age from 21 to 76. They are Lewis, Alton Jones, Alex Ortiz, Robert “Doc” Dockery, Lewis Hatcher, Brandon Lewis and L.J. Lewis. Brandon and L.J. are Leon Lewis’ sons. The group’s manager is Lueque “Q” Slaughter.

“The employees at the Richmond post office have enjoyed their singing for years, and we are happy that the whole nation now knows their talent,” said Cathy Boulé, U.S. Postal Service district communications coordinator.

Leon Lewis said the group came together when he was singing in the locker room and a coworker a few lockers over picked up the tune.

“He started humming the same song. It just started from there,” Lewis said.
Over time, others on the workroom floor joined in with Lewis and Dockery on breaks, Boulé said.

The group is still doing local performances. You can see the Spiritual Harmonizers at 5 p.m. Sunday at Glorious Church of God in Christ, 4806 Old Midlothian Turnpike. Lewis said it’s a fundraising concert for the group. Tickets are $10.

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
