Kari Callen Finds Her Courage

Kari Callen

After forty-three years, Kari Callen overcame her lifelong inhibitions from being born with a cleft lip and palate to venture on stage for her America’s Got Talent audition on July 15, 2009  and belt out a song from the depths of her soul.

Like Susan Boyle, Kari’s looks appeared to be an impediment to stardom. Like Susan, Kari volunteered that she had never been in a romantic relationship. Kari, however, is very bright and self-aware and apparently is now comfortable enough in her own skin to cast aside her fears and go for broke.

And, wow, what a voice! She received a standing ovation from the audience as well as from the three judges. More importantly than her technical skill, however, was the lifetime of emotion she poured into her song. She sang with such authenticity and vulnerability that I was on the verge of tears. What joy to see someone triumph after a lifetime of self-denial! May Kari go on to enjoy a satisfying and rewarding career doing what she loves best and inspiring others like her to stand tall and proud and share their God-given talents with the world.

How appropriate it is to close with a quote by 19th-century English novelist Mary Anne Evans, who wrote under the nom de plume George Eliot. Henry James said of Eliot, “She is magnificently ugly—deliciously hideous . . . in this vast ugliness resides a most powerful beauty which, in a very few minutes steals forth and charms the mind, so that you end as I ended, in falling in love with her.”

It’s never too late to be what you might have been.
George Eliot
