I came up to St. Cloud a couple of nights ago to see my mom and daughter and take care of a few things. Yesterday afternoon, my mom returned from grocery shopping, which is a challenge since she is in quite a lot of pain from her bad knees and right shoulder. She said that everyone ahead of her in line at Sam’s Club had full carts, which meant an interminable wait for her; she had even considered walking out because of the pain and discomfort. Then she saw a young African man standing in another line behind a couple of full carts. He was carrying only one item. She waved him over and told him to get in line in front of her. He was most grateful.
It wasn’t the first time she had let someone go ahead of her. In fact, it wasn’t even the first time that day. Earlier, at Cub Foods, she had noticed an elderly gentleman who appeared to be struggling with the after-effects of a stroke—he was limping and one hand appeared damaged. She saw him glancing at his watch so she waved him over and offered him her spot in line. He too was grateful; he said he had to catch a bus and was getting concerned about the time. She watched as he used just one hand to retrieve his wallet, write a check and rip it out for the cashier.
I told her that waving others on ahead of her, even when she was in considerable pain, was very nice of her. With a smile, she said, “It makes me feel good to help others so they don’t have to stand in line like I did.”
That makes it official. She is awarded first place in the Nicest Mom in the World contest!

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents on Amazon.
Order it at GodIsLogical.com.
In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?
Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
