Your Heart Can Heal the World

two-hands-holding-a-glowing-heartI had no idea that Jennifer, a woman I had just met, would be the catalyst for an incredibly powerful and moving experience.

Right before the lunch break in Dr. Ibrahim Jaffe’s workshop on Sunday, he asked us to choose a partner for an exercise in sending love. Jennifer was sitting closest to me so we partnered up, adjusting our chairs so that we were facing each other knee to knee. Per Ibrahim’s instructions, I began sending loving energy to Jennifer, who was supposed to describe what she was feeling.

Years before, I had participated in a similar exercise in a Reiki II class, an experience that erased any skepticism I had about my ability to send energy to others and physically detect when energy was sent back to me. So I was not surprised when Jennifer immediately said she felt loving energy around her heart.

I imagined that I was sending love to my daughter, Erin, whom I cherish beyond measure. I visualized memory after memory of our “Daddy and Erin” times together, varying from rollicking goofiness to heartbreaking sweetness to impossibly deep feelings of love that every good parent can identify with.

As the memories flooded in and I channeled them into the love I was sending to Jennifer, her reaction grew more intense. She said she felt overwhelmingly and unconditionally loved and nurtured, and added with tears in her eyes that she could feel her own heart begin to heal.

I too was becoming emotional as the energy continued to build between us. Tears filled my eyes as I delved deeper into the joy and gratitude welling up in my heart. Jennifer continued to describe how the energy I was sending was increasing in strength and scope. After five minutes or so, we were instructed to switch roles as provider and recipient.

Like Jennifer did with me, I immediately felt a warm, loving energy begin spreading across my chest. Before the exercise ended, I felt guided to once again send love to Jennifer, and we both felt bathed in the healing, protective glow of deep, deep love.

As we broke for lunch, I realized that we can send love like that to anyone on the planet; I did not have to be sitting across from them, all I needed was intention and focus. After all, the complex web of divine energy that we call the universe is a conscious energy field that connects every one of us to each other and to every atom of creation.

I had long been sending people light and love, heart to heart, but only for a few moments at a time. It was exciting to think that by simply sitting quietly for five minutes and concentrating, I could send others loving energy that may ease their pain, comfort their soul, and bolster their strength and resolve.

For those of you who think that one person cannot make a difference in this world, I beg to differ. There is no question in my mind that whomever I send love to in this manner will receive it and be changed for the better.

Love knows no boundaries. Love is limitless, self-renewing and more powerful than any other energy imaginable.

I urge you to try this exercise for yourself and experience the beauty and power that your love can add to the world.
