Sports is “Oprah” For Guys

Rick Reilly

I love the way ESPN The Magazine columnist Rick Reilly described the real meaning of sports in the December 14, 2009 issue:

Sports is Oprah for guys. I knew a Boston dad and son who hadn’t spoken in five years. Some disagreement that just grew too big to see around. But when the Red Sox won it all in 2004, the son came home. They hugged and cried and laughed, and if you think it was about baseball, you don’t know men.

Reminds me of this quote:

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.
Henry David Thoreau

The moral? Men tend to find what they need even if they don’t know what they’re looking for, don’t know they’re looking for it and don’t realize it when they find it!

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents on Amazon.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

    Phil,

I was always fascinated why men tends to discuss sports whnever they have a chance to have a little chit chat. Now I know why. Although no one could deny the fact that they love sports, it’s their way of opening up a conversation between guys. If women usually opens up a topic by discussing about the latest trend in fashion, cosmetics, culinary delights and latest diet fads, men talks about sports.
    Do you agree?

  2. Phil Bolsta Says:

Absolutely, Mel. It’s a way to break the ice and bond with whoever you are with. We are connected through shared experiences, and sports can open the door for men to get to know each other. When men talk sports, or women talk cosmetics or whatever, the details are superficial; it’s the emotion and the revealing of what you value that’s important.
