The four steps to enlightenment are learning, believing, knowing, and being. Each of these steps demands more courage and faith than the one before. Their order is absolute—none may be leapfrogged.
There are very few human beings who receive the truth complete and staggering by instant illumination. Most of us acquire it fragment by fragment, on a small scale, by successive developments, cellularly, like a laborious mosaic.
The chasm between believing and knowing can be traversed with a single bound. It is the distinction between faith that flows from intellectually knowing about God versus intuitively knowing God’s presence.
It has pleased God that divine verities should not enter the heart through the understanding, but the understanding through the heart.
In a famous 1959 BBC interview, host John Freeman asked Carl Jung, the founder of analytical psychology, “Do you now believe in God?” Jung responded, “I don’t need to believe . . . I know.”
Faith is like radar that sees through the fog—the reality of things at a distance that the human eye cannot see.
