If you have achieved a comfortable level of security, you may not even entertain the notion that the ground could shift beneath you at a moment’s notice.
Would that life were like the shadow cast by a wall or a tree, but it is like the shadow of a bird in flight.
Fear of change and the yearning for stability can dim your awareness, dull your alertness, and lull you into complacency. Hence, the first subtle signs of danger may not register.
We are never more in danger than when we think ourselves most secure, nor in reality more secure than when we seem to be most in danger.
Desperately throw your arms around all that is good in your life, and change will rear back its head and roar with delight. Run from change and it will find you. Better to stand your ground and lift up your arms in calm surrender.
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. . . . Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure . The fearful are caught as often as the bold.
A life of comfort often degenerates into stagnation and unfulfilled promise. In the deepest part of uncomfortable circumstances stands the gateway to self-awareness and personal power.
Life is always either a tightrope or a feather bed. Give me the tightrope.
Befriending change triggers a quest for self-discovery and a hunger for new experiences that deliver a richer, more authentic sense of security than the hollow promises of material comfort.
Security can only be achieved through constant change, through discarding old ideas that have outlived their usefulness and adapting others to current facts.
