The Last Song by Elton John is one of the most hauntingly sad but beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. The first verse is profoundly evocative and heartbreaking, and never fails to give me chills.
I’m thinking of a high school friend whose family abandoned him when he came out. His parents never saw him again and made no effort to contact him when they learned he was dying of AIDS. I find such cruelty unfathomable. Thankfully, AIDS is not the death sentence it was back in 1993 when this song was released, but it still claims far too many lives around the globe. May we find a cure for this dread disease sooner rather than later.
