Are You Diamond or Charcoal?

Sri Daya Mata

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the passing of Sri Daya Mata, the longtime president of Self-Reallization Fellowship. She served her guru, Paramahansa Yogananda, for nearly eighty years with love, devotion, and the joy that comes from God-realization. In honor of Daya Ma, I offer a nugget of wisdom from one of her many satsangas (spiritually themed Q&A sessions).

In the CD, Understanding the Soul’s Need for GodSri Daya Mata explained the relationship between God’s grace and your receptivity to it.

The Divine Beloved has no favorites in this world. The Divine Beloved loves all children equally. But just as the sunlight falls equally on the diamond and the charcoal side by side, it is the diamond that reflects that sunlight; the charcoal cannot reflect it. So in the same way, the sunlight of my Beloved’s grace, the sunlight of my Beloved’s love and blessings and wisdom and joy, is falling equally upon all Her children. The diamond mentalities reflect that light; the charcoal mentalities must become diamond mentalities and reflect that light.
