Whatever You Do, Do It to Please God

In church this morning, the minister said that when he was a young monk, he had taken two or three weeks to completely rewrite a booklet that he was asked to revise. After submitting it, a senior monk called him and, not knowing he was talking to the monk who had written it, told him that the original was better written and that all it had needed was a little revision here and there.

The minister said he resisted the impulse to feel frustrated and resentful. Instead, he told himself that this is what God wanted and that that was all that mattered. Cheerfully, and with greater clarity about the project, he started over and did what was asked of him. He explained that when your intent and your heart are pure, you do the very best work you can do, and you do the work for God and God alone, there is no reason to feel anger, regret or any other negative feeling. You are not attached to the results of your work because it’s in God’s hands.

Clearly, if the minister had revised the booklet not to please God but to try to please his superiors, the episode would have ended badly. As author Robert Ringer so astutely observed:

He who bases his actions solely on the belief that his efforts will be appreciated by others is doomed to disappointment. The safest assumption is that, at best, your efforts will go unnoticed; at worst, they will be held against you.

Thank you for this, Phil. What a beautiful and tremendously freeing reminder of doing everything for love of God and not for love of ego. I really needed to hear this today, so God bless you for being an angel to me and to so many others.

I’m glad you found it so meaningful, Moira. Yes, serving God instead of our own ego is a vital lesson to always keep in mind.
