Answering the Skeptics

Some readers of my book, Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, have expressed skepticism about the veracity of a few stories that feature cool metaphysical “miracles.” They usually reference the stories by Caroline Myss, Wayne Dyer and Joseph Costa.

Skepticism is healthy as long as you also keep an open mind. Unfortunately, many people refuse to acknowledge the possibility that their belief system isn’t perfect and complete. Consequently, they interpret events in ways that fit their preconceived notions and dismiss any evidence to the contrary, no matter how compelling that evidence may be. As C. W. Leadbeater said:

It is one of the commonest of mistakes to consider that the limit of our power of perception is also the limit of all there is to perceive.

All of us have divine encounters on a regular basis. We just don’t recognize them as such because we’re so focused on the external world of knowledge and achievement rather than the internal world of wisdom and experience.

Only when we wake up to the possibility that there is more to existence than our five senses can detect do we begin to understand that “miracle” is a word used only by people who do not understand how the universe operates.

We eventually recognize that a path relying solely on research, rationality and reflection has its limits. Although logic and reason are indispensable pillars of a civilized life, eventually you must be willing to leap beyond your intellect into the arms of faith. That is where enlightenment awaits; it cannot be explained, it can only be experienced.

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents on Amazon.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

  1. Jeri Says:

Thank you for your insight and wisdom……….I agree wholeheartedly……we so often only see what we’re conditioned too….and miss the miracles given us each and everyday.

A daily reminder and practice I embrace…. taking the time for stillness, openness and for the wisdom to have the eyes to recognize the answers to my “prayers”, expecting them in unexpected ways”.

    Blessings,

    Jeri

  2. Phil Bolsta Says:

I agree that stillness is essential, Jeri. I remind myself throughout each day to slow down and be in the moment. Unfortunately I haven’t made much progress. I have much work to do in that area, as I suspect many do.
