Be Your Authentic Self!

After reading my blog, a friend told me today that he was impressed with my courage to write so openly and honestly about my views. I told him it wasn’t courage at all, that I was simply being myself.

Then again, it wasn’t too long ago when I would have hesitated to share my thoughts on life and spirituality with anyone and everyone. I worried about what people would think and wanted everyone to like me. (Good luck with that!)

What changed? I guess I simply decided that life was too short not to be authentic in every moment. Sure, I might alienate some people, but that loss would be more than offset by the deeper connections I would forge with people who valued emotionally intimate relationships.

Indeed, through my writing and speaking and reaching out to people, I’m making new friends almost every day, all across the country. It’s wonderful! Life, after all, is about relationships, and the more honest and intimate the better.

Now that I think about it, I’d say I made the leap from thinking, What does this person think about me? to What do I think of this person? the moment I stopped worrying about having what I want and focusing more on wanting what I have.

What does that mean? You look for and appreciate the gift in every possession, every encounter, every situation. You trust that whatever shows up in your life is there for a reason. You humbly acknowledge that you will only be given experiences that are appropriate for your present circumstances, your life’s purpose, and the level of your consciousness. You recognize that as you learn and grow, you expand your capacity to receive.

I can assure you, it’s awfully liberating to give up control over something you had no control over to begin with. As the old folk proverb goes, If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans!

Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
Dr. Seuss

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

Thanks Phil. I know everything you’ve said is true, deep in my spirit. When I allow that white noise to interfere with what I know, I get scared. It certainly helps to read another person’s black and white, tangible words. The next time I find myself wondering why this has happened to someone like me, I’ll remember to trust. I’m OK!

  2. Phil Bolsta Says:

Nothing wrong with getting scared, Deb. It’s actually a good thing. Every time that fear comes up, we get a chance to see what we’re made up, to rise to the challenge of becoming better than we were before. i often think that I’ve conquered fear in a certain area, that I know too much to ever let fear get the best of me again. And then . . . here it comes again Oh, well, just another opportunity to grow!

We all need to remind ourselves of that, Becca!
