Charice—Her Philippines Performances (2007-2008)

In April 2007, Charice performed a medley of Aegis songs at an outdoor concert with other young Filipino singers for an episode of ASAP (All-Star Sunday Afternoon Party), a weekly TV show on ABS-CBN. Aegis is a very popular band in the Philippines.

On the same show, Charice sang a Gloria Estefan song.

ANYTHING FOR YOU

On April 29, 2007, eleven days before her fifteenth birthday, Charice teamed with her best friend, Rhap Salazar, whom she met in the Little Big Star competition, to sing a Barry Manilow tune on ASAP. (See Charice and Rhap’s November 19, 2008 duet of And I Am Telling You I’m not Going later in this post.)

READY TO TAKE A CHANCE AGAIN

Charice sang a duet of a Celine Dion song with Angelie Urquico on ASAP on June 3, 2007. What’s their connection? Charice placed third in Little Big Star‘s first season, which ended on April 8, 2006. Angelie was the winner of Little Big Star‘s second season, which ended less than three months later, on July 1, 2006.

TELL HIM

On December 1, 2007. seven weeks after her triumphant performance on Star King in South Korea, Charice sang her signature song on  ASAP.

AND I AM TELLING YOU I’M NOT GOING

Charice performed on UKG (Umagang Kay Ganda, which roughly translates to “Good Morning”), a morning variety show in the Philippines, on December 5, 2007.

THE PRAYER

On December 9, 2007, Charice appeared on Boy and Kris, a daily Philippine morning talk and lifestyle program. She sang parts of many songs while host Boy Abunda narrated a retrospective of Charice’s accomplishments interspersed with interview quetsions.

BOY AND KRIS (PART 2 OF 2)

On December 28, 2007, Charice blew the roof off the studio on Wowowee, a noontime variety and game show broadcast by ABS-CBN.

AND I AM TELLING YOU I’M NOT GOING

On December 29, 2007, ten days after her game-changing appearance on Ellen, Charice was interviewed on Entertainment Live, a Saturday afternoon showbiz-oriented talk show on ABS-CBN. She followed the interview with a Beyonce song.

LISTEN

On New Year’s Eve in 2007, Charice sang a Destiny’s Child song on Umagang Kay Ganda.

STAND UP FOR LOVE

On January 5, 2008, Charice performed a rousing Whitney Houston medley on Wowowee.

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, SO EMOTIONAL and
THE QUEEN OF THE NIGHT

The next day, January 6, 2008, Charice sang two songs on ASAP. After Charice’s first song, popular Filipina singer Lani takes the stage for a song. Charice and Lani then sing a duet.

I WILL ALWYAS LOVE YOU and WHEN YOU BELIEVE

Charice performed three songs on Boy and Kris on January 15, 2008.

AND I AM TELLING YOU I’M NOT GOING

LISTEN

I HAVE NOTHING

On January 29, 2008, Charice sang two songs on Citizen Pinoy, which airs every Sunday on The Filipino Channel (TFC). The program, which specializes in helping the Filipino community deal with immigration problems, is usually taped in the U.S. with host and immigration attorney Michael Gurfinkel, but this edition was filmed in the Philippines.

MAY PAG-ASA KA
(THERE IS HOPE)

ONE MOMENT IN TIME

On February 2, 2008, Charice received a standing ovation on Wowowee for belting out a powerful show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Carousel.

YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE

The next day, February 3, 2008, Charice teamed up with Jed Madela for a rousing duet of a Barbara Streisand standard on ASAP.

SOMEWHERE

On February 17, 2008, Charice shared the stage with Sarah Geronimo on ASAP.

A SONG FOR MAMA

On or about February 22, 2008,  Charice is joined by two Filipina divas, Bituin (on the left) and Frenchie Dy (on the right), to sing a medley on Wowowee.

WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?

Charice performed a controversial Gwen Stefani song on ASAP on March 2, 2008.

HOLLABACK GIRL

Charice is, hands down, one of the most fan-friendly pop stars on the planet. A fan with the online name scubajoe12 traveled to the Philippines to see Charice. When they walked into a music store, Charice picked up a guitar and started singing. This video was posted on March 12, 2008.

TORETE
(CONFUSED)

Charice sang a duet with Willie Revillame on Wowowee on March 15, 2008. Well, actually, Willie sang solo for the first two minutes, then Charice sang solo, and then they came together to finish off this Tagalog song.

MUNTING HILING
(SMALL REQUEST)

Wonder how Charice would handle gospel? Here’s the answer to that question, courtesy of her March 16, 2008 performance on Wowowee.

JOYFUL, JOYFUL, WE ADORE THEE

Here is Charice, on a March 29, 2008, Wowowee appearance singing with Aegis, a very popular band in the Philippines.

ALL BY MYSELF and ONE MOMENT IN TIME

On April 15, 2008, Charice appeared on Boy and Kris.

ONE MOMENT IN TIME

On the same show, Charice briefly sang a cappella while talking with Boy and Kris:

THROUGH THE RAIN

Charice participated in the Bantay Bata 163 10th Anniversary celebration on April 27, 2008. Bantay Bata 163, the  childcare program of the ABS CBN Foundation, is a gift of love to Filipino children. What began as a hotline and rescue operation has evolved into a truly holistic system which includes therapy, after care and preventive programs.

I BELIEVE

Charice performed a touching ballad on Sharon, a Sunday night musical talk show hosted by Sharon Cuneta, on May 18, 2008.

MAMA

Charice and Sharon then sang a duet on one of Charice’s signature diva songs.

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

Here is Charice performing a song from The Bodyguard on ASAP on June 15, 2008.

I HAVE NOTHING

On the same show, Charice joined forces with fellow Philippine singers Sam Concepcion (the boy who won the Little Big Star competition in 2006 when Charice placed third), Nikki Gil and Billy Crawford. Charice and Sam sang the first part of a song by Brian McKnight. They then yielded the stage to Nikki and Billy. All four then came together to finish the performance.

WIN

Charice performed a medley of Christina Aguilera songs on Wowowee on June 21, 2008.

FIGHTER, DIRRTY and LADY MARMALADE

Charice has sung duets with her idols Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, but this duet partner tops them all: her beloved mother, Raquel. Here are mother and daughter singing two songs on Boy and Kris on June 24, 2008.

EVER SINCE THE WORLD BEGAN

WHEN YOU BELIEVE

Let’s break from chronological order to keep the family duets together. Here are Charice and her brother, Carl, singing together on Boy and Kris on November 2, 2008. They are interviewed after the song, but unfortunately subtitles are not available.

SINTA
(MY LOVE)

Her July 11, 2008 appearance on Umagang Kay Ganda is proof that Charice can handle technical difficulties like a seasoned veteran. The music stopped one line into her song, but Charice didn’t miss a beat. She just forged ahead with an a cappella version.

POWER OF THE DREAM

(Click here to see how Charice expertly dealt with technical difficulties at the Philippine Independence Day Parade in New York City on June 1, 2008.)

Charice was back on Boy and Kris on July 18, 2008, once again performing the hit song from Carousel.

YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE

Back on Wowowee on October 4, 2008, Charice belted out a tune that was written and produced by David Foster (Charice’s mentor) and Babyface for the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics.

THE POWER OF THE DREAM

Ready for a Charice fest? She sang four(!) songs on Boy and Kris on October 6, 2008. Click here to see the interview part of that show, which also included FalseVoice.

Here is TMTGITW singing a Beyonce song, followed by a Whitney Houston song. (I’m sure you’ve figured out by now that TMTGITW stands for The Most Talented Girl In The World!)

LISTEN and TRY IT ON MY OWN

The next song was given to Charice as a gift after she recorded it, along with six other songs, for Ten Songs Productions in Sweden in June 2007. After singing it, she told Boy and Kris that the song executives in Sweden “composed the song for me. It’s really nice, I love it.”  Miss Versatile then accompanies herself on the guitar for her final song!

AMAZING and MY EVERYTHING

On Boy and Kris on November 19, 2008, Charice sang a Whitney Houston hit.

RUN TO YOU

Charice then teamed up with her best friend, Rhap Salazar, who she met on Little Big Star, a singing contest (conducted from September 24, 2005 to April 8, 2006) in which Charice placed third. They make a great pair!

AND I AM TELLING YOU I’M NOT GOING

As an early Christmas gift to all her fans, Charice put on a free mini-concert in Eastwood City in Manila on December 5, 2008. After a 5 PM “meet and greet” autograph session in the Eastwood Mall Atrium, the concert was held at 8 PM in the Eastwood Central Plaza. Clearly, Charice’s sweet nature is matched by her generosity of spirit.

During a Q&A session with fans, Charice was asked how she could use her celebrity status to become a role model for youth. Charice humbly replied:

Well, I don’t want people to get tired of me. I’d like them to like me, not necessarily forever, but I’d want them to think that I’m the same person they’ve always known in the beginning and in the end, should I not last in show business. Should I disappear from the public eye, I want them to remember me as the same person throughout and that I didn’t change.

EASTWOOD CONCERT (9 OF 9)
SA ARAW NG PASKO
(ON CHRISTMAS DAY)

On December 21, 2008, on ASAP, Charice performed a duet with Arnel Pineda, a Filipino singer-songwriter and currently the lead singer of the American rock band Journey. Like Charice, Arnel endured many hardships on his path to stardom.

ALONE

Also on December 21, 2008, Charice performed a heartfelt rendition of a popular Christmas song on ABS-CBN’s Pamaskong Handog (Christmas Offering).

O HOLY NIGHT

The next day, December 22, 2008, Charice appeared once again on Boy and Kris, performing a Christmas song written by David Foster.

GROWN UP CHRISTMAS LIST

Charice followed that performance by singing a Philippine song. Sorry, no subtitles.

IINGATAN KA (I’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU)

At the close of the show, Charice and Arnel Pineda came together for an impromptu duet. By the way, standing between Boy and Kris is the adorable Charlie Green, who preceded Charice’s first song with an energetic performance of Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

AGAINST ALL ODDS

Less than three months later, on March 8, 2009, Nikki Gil of ASAP briefly interviewed the members of Journey during the band’s visit to the Philippines. In the interview, the band expressed interest in performing with Charice.

Here is a special treat. Apparently, Charice was passing by a church in Canyon Woods, Tagaytay City when she was spotted and asked to come in and sing at mass. How cool is that? Not many superstars would say, “Sure, I’d be happy to.”

O, HOLY NIGHT

Charice belts out Gloria Gaynor‘s anthem on The Buzz, a weekly entertainment news and talk show on December 28, 2008.

I WILL SURVIVE

Here is Charice on ASAP on December 28, 2008, singing a song recorded by Whitney Houston for the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea.

ONE MOMENT IN TIME

Charice regularly performed at area malls, often venturing into the audience to interact with her fans while she was singing. Here is a sampling of those mall shows, beginning with a May 4, 2008 show at the SM City Southmall in which she sang a Beyonce hit.

IRREPLACEABLE

At the same show, Charice ventured out into the audience to greet fans while she sang one of the songs she recorded in Sweden in June 2007.

IT CAN ONLY GET BETTER

Charice also mingled with the crowd during a show at the SM City Taytay mall on June 29, 2008.

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

Here is Charice demonstrating her sense of humor at Robinsons Midtown Mall in Manila on August 2, 2008. Inhale some helium, then listen to Charice’s mellifluous tones at 4:12 of this video.

AND I AM TELLING YOU I’M NOT GOING

In case you hadn’t noticed, Charice is quite the goofball! And I mean that in a very, very good way. She’s always cracking jokes and acting silly to try to make her mother and brother laugh. She started trying to crack them up when money was tight and stress was high, and she’s continued her goofball ways to this day. It suits her well!

Charice is quite the contradiction—she’s a goofball who likes to act half her age, but she can sing with emotion as if she were three times her age. Yet she pulls it off beautifully! Why does it work for her? Because she’s so authentic. She’s comfortable in her own skin and clearly having the time of her life.

Want more? You came to the right site! Here’s a bonus: Charice and ten-year-old crooner Charlie Green (who is half Filipino) singing Nat King Cole’s Smile on Entertainment Live on July 26, 2008. Charlie had wowed the audience and judges (especially Simon Cowell!) with his audition on Britain’s Got Talent.

• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
