Are Courage and Convictions Compatible?

integrity-rock

Living with integrity means that you consider honesty your best friend. You understand that telling the truth—or what you perceive to be the truth—is a sacred obligation.

We have to live today by what truth we can get today and be ready tomorrow to call it falsehood.
            William James

While you are always prepared to speak the truth, you recognize the importance of discretion and timing.

If it is not truthful and not helpful, don’t say it.
If it is truthful and not helpful, don’t say it.
If it is not truthful and helpful, don’t say it.
If it is truthful and helpful, wait for the right time.
            Buddha

Do not mistake truth with Truth. If evidence proves that your confidence in a “truth” was misplaced, you correct your thinking and move on.

A very popular error—having the courage of one’s convictions. Rather, it is a matter of having the courage for an attack upon one’s convictions.
           Friedrich Nietzsche

Are there exceptions to truth telling? Yes. To use an extreme example, if a Nazi soldier knocked on your door during World War II and asked if you were harboring Jews, you would not be acting with integrity if you answered affirmatively.

Your integrity is the bridge between truth and justice. Listen to the ceaseless inner voice within and you will cross that bridge at the speed of thought.

Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never to be content with a half truth when the whole can be won.
