Conversation with Neale Donald Walsch

I was honored to include Neale Donald Walsch in my book, Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything. Neale told me the following story in a phone conversation and I’m pleased to present it here, beginning with his bio.

Neale Donald Walsch

Neale Donald Walsch
is a modern-day spiritual messenger whose words are touching the world. He has written more than twenty books on spirituality and its practical application in everyday life, including the multimillion-selling, “With God” series: Conversations with God, Books I–III; Friendship with God; Communion with God; The New Revelations; Tomorrow’s God; What God Wants; and Home with God. Six of those books reached the New York Times Bestseller List. Walsch is the creator of four nonprofit organizations: The Group of 1000
, Humanity’s Team, the School of the New Spirituality, and the ReCreation Foundation, all of which seek to create a new spirituality on the planet. Click here to visit Neale’s primary website.

How Conversations with God first came to me was the most profound experience of my life. it was a dreary morning in February 1992. Everything in my life had fallen apart—my relationship with my significant other had gone downhill, my career had reached a dead end, and even my health was deteriorating rapidly. I couldn’t understand what was happening or why. I had obeyed all the rules I had been carefully taught by my parents, teachers, ministers, and various other life mentors, but I simply hadn’t achieved what I thought I ought to have achieved. And so I was deeply in depression for a number of months.

I was awakened at 4:15 in the morning. I was deeply troubled, very frustrated, and very angry with God. I went to the larger part of the house and just started pacing, not knowing what to do or how to deal with these emotions I was having.

I picked up a yellow legal pad that I found on the coffee table and began writing an angry letter to God. The letter was filled with all the typical questions we ask when we have a lot of anger, like What does it take for me to have my life work? and What have I done to deserve a life of such continuing struggle? and Somebody tell me the rules, because I’ll play if you’ll just tell me the rules!

Then I heard a voice as clearly as anything I have ever heard. It was a physical voice, there in the room. And the voice said, “Neale, do you really want answers to all of these questions, or are you just venting?” I couldn’t believe it. I looked around to see if anybody was there. Nobody was, so I said to myself, Well, I am venting, but if you’ve got answers, I’d sure as heck would like to know what they are. And with that, I began receiving answers to all the questions I had been asking.

I picked up the yellow legal pad again and began writing down what I was now hearing in my head. As I was writing, I began asking other questions in my mind; as I did so, I immediately received other answers. And as I wrote those answers down, I received other questions. Before I knew it, I was involved in an on-paper dialogue with God. I wouldn’t have called it “God” at the time, of course. I didn’t know what was happening. I just knew that I was asking the deepest questions of my life and getting answers right then and there.

It was a very moving moment. I was weeping as I wrote, weeping at the beauty and the wonder of it and also at the feeling I was having, which was a feeling of great peace and serenity inside. This went on for two and a half hours. Then the house started getting up, so I stopped, although I could’ve gone on forever. The same thing happened at 4:15 the next morning and again every night thereafter for two and a half or three weeks. Then it began to taper off—instead of every night, it began happening two or three times a week, then once a week. Over the period of the next year, I continued to have these experiences. The result was Conversations with God, Book 1, which became a publishing phenomenon and was translated into thirty-seven languages.

That initial event changed my life completely. It affected me deeply and returned me to my grandest notion about God, which is that God is utterly without judgment and is always there and willing to communicate with us and help us, if we’ll only open ourselves to that possibility and that experience.

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

sixty-seconds-coverPhil is also the author of Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, a collection of 45 inspiring, life-changing stories from prominent authors and thought leaders he interviewed. The roster of storytellers includes Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsch, Caroline Myss, Larry Dossey, Rachel Naomi Remen, Bernie Siegel, Dean Ornish, and Christiane Northrup. Sixty Seconds has been translated into four languages: Italian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. Reading this book is like spending a few minutes face to face with each of the contributors and listening to their personal stories.

  2. Phil Bolsta Says:

Very cool indeed. Glad you liked it, Annie!

  3. Juan Dettwiler Says:

I purchased by an impulse the three first books. I made a mistake that I just realized. My mother language is Spanish and I am good in English i think.
The books are in German and I really can not understand them in order to really enjoy them and profit through understanding. I will give them to someone and look for some in Spanish. The spanish language is like my circulatory sytem, I think, write, dream etc, in Spanish indespite that I am many years in Europe.
I have been reading much from Dr. Dyer, Chopra, and others that I do not remember so well. Sincerely. Juan

  4. Phil Bolsta Says:

It sounds like you were meant to buy the German books so that the person you give them to will be able to read them! Good luck, Juan!
