When I interviewed Larry Julian for my book, Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, he told me a deeply personal story about faith, fear and family. Here is that story, beginning with his bio.
Julian, a consultant and speaker, specializes in Biblically-based leadership development and strategic planning. He’s authored two nationally acclaimed business books: God Is My CEO, God Is My Coach and God Is My Success. Julian’s mission is to help businesspeople integrate their work and faith to be the success God intended them to be. Click here to visit Larry’s website.
I have a strong faith, but a few years ago, I went through “a difficult walk in the desert.” My wife and I were trying to have a child and had already experienced a miscarriage. I had also had five years of nothing but failures and discouragements in trying to get my book, God is My CEO, written and published. I had wanted to quit a hundred times.
In November 1998, I got hit with a one-two punch that literally put me on my knees. I had gone to New York to shop the book to major publishers with my agent. I felt like all the frustrations were coming to an end, that the book was finally going to be picked up, because five publishers were going to take part in a blind bid that Friday. But by the end of the day, there were zero offers. I felt totally rejected and was ready to give up on the book once and for all.
Then, a week later, coming on the heels of that first devastating blow, my wife had a second miscarriage. I was in tremendous emotional pain, and I asked God in great anguish why all this was happening. A day or two later, I was sitting in a Caribou Coffee in Plymouth, Minnesota. There was a huge storm system coming through and it was storming and raining quite heavily.
Now, I love the weather, I’ve always been a weather fanatic. But that afternoon, when I was in great despair, I saw something I had never seen before. Without warning, the storm clouds parted, the rain stopped, and there was a patch of blue sky with a ray of sun shining down, as if there were a hole in the sky. In the midst of my personal storm, I was witnessing the eye of the storm, which is a very rare thing to see. It was almost as if the Lord was talking specifically to me and assuring me that everything was going to be okay.
It was a very, very powerful experience, and I felt a tremendous peace come over me. It brought me to a much deeper place in my oneness with God. Then, within the next couple days, at the very time when I needed comfort and support, two of the most important people in my life called and asked how I was doing. I saw clearly that all of this was a perfect illustration of how the Lord speaks to us through both circumstances and people.
This calls to mind a scripture, Romans 8:18: “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” I now know this to be true. Nothing is wasted. Suffering is important because suffering produces hope and hope does not disappoint. As you suffer, not only do you grow closer to God in spirit, but you become more valuable because you are then able to help others who are struggling. Now, as a speaker and author, I provide comfort to others who are hurting like I was. That’s what God does, He helps us so we can help others.
Ten months later, I finally got a book contract. And ten months after that, our daughter, Grace, was born. Eight months later, in the spring of 2001, I took my daughter to the Ridgedale Mall just to walk around with her and give my wife a break from child care. My book was due to come out soon but I hadn’t seen a copy yet. As we were walking by a B. Dalton bookstore, I looked over—and there was my book on display in the window. I’ll never forget that moment. I remember thinking that God had a great sense of humor because the first time I set my eyes on the book was while I was walking my daughter. It was like getting blessed with two miracles at once. That’s what I love about the Lord, He always delivers on his promises.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.
In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?
Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
