Might As Well Jump!

I’m not a big fan of jumping rope but I was transfixed by this amazing performance. Watching it, I wondered why I hadn’t heard of these girls before because they’re good enough to be a finalist on America’s Got Talent.

According to Twirl Planet, an online twirling baton retailer, this performance jump rope team is called The Firecrackers. They perform during halftime at basketball games across the country. This video of their performance at the April 2, 2009 Army vs. Navy game has received nearly ten million hits online!

This talented bunch of fourth through eighth graders are part of a program at the Kings Local School District in Ohio. The jump rope team was established thirteen years ago by physical education coach Lynn Kelley. The team practices two hours a day, five to six days a week.

Jump roping has many parallels to the sport of baton twirling. There is an entire circuit of competitive and performance jump rope activities throughout the U.S. as well as internationally.

The Kings Firecrackers have been featured in Ohio’s The Pulse-Journal. Their past performances include The David Letterman Show, a Presidential Inauguration, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as coverage in American Girl Magazine.

All I can say is, Man, these girls must jump rope in their sleep!
