It was a treat interviewing James Redfield for my book, Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything. James told me about a startling vision he experienced at the age of twenty-three that gave him the first inkling of the work he would be doing in the world, including writing The Celestine Prophecy, which quickly became a publishing phenomenon. Here is an excerpt from James’ story, beginning with his bio.
Redfield’s first book, The Celestine Prophecy, an adventure parable about a spiritual journey to Peru, was a global phenomenon. In 1995 and 1996, it was the top-selling American book in the world. The sequel, The Tenth Insight: Holding the Vision, was published in 1996. The two books combined to make Redfield the best-selling hardcover author in the world that year. The third book in the series, The Secret of Shambhala: In Search of the Eleventh Insight, was published in 1999. Redfield also co-wrote the screenplay for the film version of The Celestine Prophecy, which premiered in April 2006. Click here to visit James’ website.
Back in 1973, I was hiking in Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the North Carolina side. I must have been two miles deep in the woods, far away from any roads, just getting in touch with the beauty of the pristine, old-growth forest. Suddenly, I had what I call a birth vision, which is a remembrance of the intentions I had for this lifetime before incarnating on the planet.
The first thing I noticed was that everything became super beautiful. Colors were deeper, lights were brighter, and the world seemed to turn more spiritual. Trees were no longer just trees but living entities. I felt lifted into a higher self-wisdom, and deeply connected to the environment around me.
The vision began by showing me how I had begun walking my spiritual path. I saw myself at fourteen or fifteen, beginning to explore the spiritual dimensions of life. I was reading Norman Vincent Peale and Ruth Montgomery, wondering about everything from the effects of positive thinking to angelic contact to communicating with departed loved ones. Then, in college, I studied different religions and philosophies while majoring in sociology. As I relived these experiences, I realized they had been preparing me for what was to come.
Then the vision went into the future. It showed me highlights of everything that was going to happen to me creatively—everything that I was going to create and offer to the world over the next few decades. I saw myself developing my spiritual philosophy and writing books that would help awaken people all over the world to a deeper spirituality. I saw that I would be making at least one movie and presenting lectures on cultural evolution and spiritual development. Although it was essentially a vision of my possible future, it felt more like a memory of what I wanted to accomplish in this life.
The vision lasted quite awhile in spiritual time because I lived out very specific events and experiences. It wasn’t focused only on what I was supposed to deliver into the world, it also showed me the growth steps I needed to take in order to accomplish it all. In real time, however, it probably lasted only four or five minutes.
And then it was gone and I was back in the forest. It was a transcendent experience, terribly exciting and inspiring and energizing. That feeling stayed with me about a week before it started to fade. Being only twenty-one, and never having written anything, I started to doubt whether what I saw was true, whether it was something I could or would become. I wondered if it was all just a pipe dream. I spent the next fifteen years as a counselor working with emotionally disturbed and abused adolescents.

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.
Order it at GodIsLogical.com.
In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?
Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
Phil is also the author of Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, a collection of 45 inspiring, life-changing stories from prominent authors and thought leaders he interviewed. The roster of storytellers includes Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsch, Caroline Myss, Larry Dossey, Rachel Naomi Remen, Bernie Siegel, Dean Ornish, and Christiane Northrup. Sixty Seconds has been translated into four languages: Italian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. Reading this book is like spending a few minutes face to face with each of the contributors and listening to their personal stories.
