Astrological Predictions for 2010 for Each Zodiac Sign

December 31, 2009

Laurie Baum

These astrological predictions for each zodiac sign for 2010 were written by my friend Laurie Baum, MSW, a psychological astrologer and psychotherapist in practice in Encinitas, California.

Personally, I never had much of an appreciation for astrology and just didn’t care enough about the subject to investigate it further. Then two things happened.

First, I happened to read a chapter in a life-changing book that burned off the fog of ignorance and answered every question I had about astrology. It was written with clarity, precision, wit and wisdom, and I felt the subject come brilliantly alive for me as I read it. Click here to read that excerpt on astrology.

Second, I had an hour-long astrological reading with Laurie Baum today. We discussed every area I could think of: health, relationships, finances, lessons in need of learning, major life changes to come. Not only did she nail everything—and I mean everything—about me, but she provided very helpful insights that will help me navigate the years ahead with more confidence and authority. It was uncanny: everything she told me aligned perfectly with what my intuition had long been telling me; but she also went far beyond that point and gave me much to think about. This reading with Laurie gave me a much deeper appreciation of the value of astrology and a more profound respect for its power. Thank you, Laurie!

NOTE: After this post appeared, Alan, a very spiritually minded friend of mine, e-mailed me: “Given your glowing recommendations I just sent Laurie an email requesting a reading.” Three days later, Alan sent me this note: “I had a wonderful astrology reading experience with Laurie. She was able to deliver insightful information in a comprehensive and compassionate manner. I found it timely and useful on many levels so I thank you for introducing me to her.”

You, too, can benefit from Laurie’s wisdom. She writes a free astrological newsletter about how planetary alignments affect our lives on earth. Click here to e-mail Laurie to subscribe at no cost, or visit Laurie’s website and click on “Free Email Newsletter.”

Laurie is a former newspaper and news magazine reporter who is profiled in the books Psychic New York and The 100 Top Psychics in America.

Laurie also offers counseling appointments by phone. She will answer your questions about major life decisions and talk with you about the reasons you have incarnated, the lessons you are here to learn, where you are on the wheel of karma, and the psychological developmental cycles you have been through and are going through. She will look at current influences on your health, finances, relationships, career, and any relocation plans that may be necessary. She also will look ahead with you at the next seven years of your life. A reading with Laurie can help you take the next step in your life. Sessions, which are available via landline phone or Skype (audio or video), are digitally recorded.

Life After Death After Life

December 30, 2009

Paramahansa Yogananda

In chapter 43 of his spiritual classic, Autobiography of a YogiParamahansa Yogananda recalls the miraculous day when his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar, revealed to him the details of the afterlife.

I found this chapter both thrilling and uplifting. I love the idea that we continue to learn and grow and improve ourselves through countless lifetimes, whether we are incarnated or not.

So which would you prefer, an eternity of playing the harp on fluffy clouds or the worlds within worlds described by Yogananda’s guru?

Here is a long excerpt from that chapter.

“As prophets are sent on earth to help men work out their physical karma, so I have been directed by God to serve on an astral planet as a savior,” Sri Yukteswar explained. “It is called Hiranyaloka or ‘Illumined Astral Planet.’ There I am aiding advanced beings to rid themselves of astral karma and thus attain liberation from astral rebirths. The dwellers on Hiranyaloka are highly developed spiritually; all of them had acquired, in their last earth-incarnation, the meditation-given power of consciously leaving their physical bodies at death. No one can enter Hiranyaloka unless (more…)

How Bad Do You Want It?

December 29, 2009

In response to my post on doing work that you love, a new friend on Twitter just tweeted to ask if fifty-eight was too old to quit a job she didn’t like and pursue her dream career. No, not at all, I told her. She was still a spring chicken! The most important thing, I advised her, was to keep score with joy and love rather than dollars. It’s a question of priorities.

Whether it’s a different job, losing weight, a new relationship or any other change you’d like to make in your life, I have two questions for you:

• How (more…)

The Interview With God: The Video

December 27, 2009

When I first watched The Interview With God, I was pleasantly surprised that it far exceeded my expectations. It is well written and presented with loving wisdom.

According to The Interview With God website, which was created in 2001, this video is part of the Angel Network LLC series which includes the Pathways to Peace video. Here is the San Diego-based company’s mission statement:

Pardon Me While I Mess With Your Mind

December 26, 2009

Ever since I was a kid, I thought optical illusions were cool. Here are some of my favorites. Hope you enjoy them!

Let’s start with a video by Ok Go for their song, ‘The Writing’s on the Wall,” which offers some real-time illusions!

Is this a young girl or an old woman?

Christmas Is For Cubs!

December 25, 2009

Erin and her Poppa Kent on her very first Christmas

When my lil’ bear cub, Erin, was nine, she was lying in bed one night at 9:15. It was past her bedtime but she was still wide awake. I suggested that she think of pleasant things—like Christmas, which was just two weeks away— until she drifted off to sleep. Erin informed me that that was quite impossible. “If I think about Christmas,” she said quite seriously, “I’ll (more…)

Life Is Short, Do What You Love!

December 24, 2009
Diane LaMere

Diane LaMere

In the late ’90s, I was writing catalog copy for Fingerhut, a part-time freelance job which I greatly enjoyed. The woman working next to me, Diane LaMere, was doing the same work but felt very differently about it. She found the work tedious and longed to spend her days painting instead.

One day, after she mentioned again how she didn’t want to be there, I asked if she needed to work at Fingerhut to put food on the table. No, she said, her husband could support them both if need be. “So why are you still here?” I asked. “What’s stopping you from doing what you love?”

The question startled her. She just looked at me and I could see the light bulb go on. In a matter of weeks, she had turned in her resignation and was gone.

Fast-forward ten years to this week when I received an e-mail out of the blue:

I don’t know if you remember but I used to sit next to you downstairs at Fingerhut. I really didn’t like the job much and I remember complaining about it to you and you said why don’t you quit and do something you like. And so I did. I am now (more…)

I Believe In the Sun

December 23, 2009

The concept of forgiveness is harder to swallow when applied to shockingly brutal individual acts and crimes against humanity.

I believe in the sun—even when it does not shine; I believe in love—even when it is not shown; I believe in God—even when He does not speak.
Scratched into a basement wall by a Holocaust victim

People with malicious intentions may exercise their free will by hurting others. God will not directly interfere because, by definition, free will cannot be interfered with. Consequently, God’s plan for each of us must weather continual course corrections; in extreme cases, our life’s plan must be rewritten. Even then, however, karmic forces are at work and angels hover near.

When you mix free will you get certain deviants. . . . You think that just because there is an absence of good, for instance, that evil exists. This is not so. In fact, things are far more intricate.
Lena Lees

It is insensitive at best and cruel at worst to suggest to those who have suffered horrifically that there may be even a modicum of meaning behind unspeakable crimes. And yet, even as we honor another’s grief, it (more…)

We Choose Our Joys and Sorrows

December 22, 2009

As awareness grows, we realize that adversarial relationships are an illusion, and that every difficult encounter has been divinely orchestrated.

Before incarnating, we agreed to participate in situations on earth that would help us learn pivotal lessons, achieve our life’s purpose, and advance our spiritual growth.

We choose our joys and sorrows long before we experience them.
Kahlil Gibran

From this perspective. every quarrel, every betrayal, every hostility becomes a gift, an opportunity to grow and evolve.

If you accept that such sacred contracts exist between (more…)

Do Not Take It Personally

December 21, 2009

Virtually everyone, no matter how horribly misguided they may be, believes that the way they conduct their life is the right way, the best way, and wholly consistent with the way they see the world.

Pardon him; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
George Bernard Shaw

Therefore, do not take every transgression so personally; the way someone treats you says far less about you than it does about them.

If we could read the secret (more…)

Recognize the Limitations of Who You Used to Be

December 20, 2009

How do we begin the process of forgiveness, of release? It may help to view your adversary in a new light—not as a powerful monster, but as a flawed, insecure human being in need of love and compassion. In other words, much like yourself.

We must learn actually not to have enemies, but only confused adversaries who are ourselves in disguise.
Alice Walker

In fact, you may be your own antagonist. Resentment is the inability to forgive others; guilt is the inability to forgive yourself.

Every guilty person is his own hangman.

If you are wracked with guilt, it (more…)

Sidewalk Artist Julian Beever’s Masterpieces

December 19, 2009

Julian Beever

Chalk artist Julian Beever is the master of distortion, and I mean that in a very, very good way. English by birth and now living in Belgium, Julian has been creating his trompe l’oeil chalk drawings since the mid-1990s.

Trompe l’oeil is an art technique using realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that two-dimensional objects are three dimensional. Julian’s chalk drawings are created using a projection called anamorphosis, which creates the illusion of three dimensions when viewed from the correct angle.

These technical explanations are lost on me. I am no closer to understanding how he creates his astonishing 3-D pavement drawings than I was when I first viewed them. Just trying to play 3-D checkers makes my brain hurt.

Julian also creates wall murals and fine art paintings.

Prepare to be amazed!

The illusion of the Politicians Meeting Their End was drawn outside The Bank of England in 1997

Keep in mind that these drawings only work from one viewpoint; otherwise the image appears strangely distorted. Two examples:

Whom Shall You Bless With Your Kindness?

December 18, 2009

When you begin appreciating every moment, you naturally begin appreciating others more. You recognize the fragility of life on this earth and vow that you will not leave any words unspoken with those you love.

If you had an hour to live and could only make one phone call, who would you call, what would you say, and why are you waiting?
Stephen Levine

Al Autrey: Friend, Patriot, Hero

December 17, 2009

I salute you, Al

I just returned from a wonderful dinner with Al Autrey, one of the best friends I’ve ever had. Al was a year ahead of me in high school and we’ve been close ever since.

Al is a doctor who specializes in emergency room medicine. Seven years ago, after a year of soul-searching following 9-11, Al enlisted in the military to help develop medically-related protocols and strategies to keep our country safe. He routinely puts in 14 to 15 hours a day and may yet be deployed to Iraq.

He didn’t have to do any of this. He could have had a nice, predictable, comfortable life making a whole lot more (more…)

Every Request Can Bring You Closer to Enlightenment

December 16, 2009

The law of attraction states that the more you believe in, think about, visualize, and feel the manifestation of your desire, the more you subtly reconfigure yourself energetically. Through your thoughts, words, and actions, you consciously, subconsciously, and unconsciously become a living magnet, growing more powerful by the day.

When the bull’s-eye becomes as big in your mind as an elephant, you are sure to hit it.
Alejandro Jodorowsky

Inevitably, through sheer force of will you reach critical mass, at which point the object of your desire—or opportunities designed to deliver the essence of what you desire—cannot help but show up in your life.

No matter what the outcome, every request can bring you that much closer to enlightenment. First, if the essence of what you desire is fulfilled, that brings you closer to peace, which brings you closer to God. Second, if you (more…)
