Sidewalk Artist Julian Beever’s Masterpieces

Julian Beever

Chalk artist Julian Beever is the master of distortion, and I mean that in a very, very good way. English by birth and now living in Belgium, Julian has been creating his trompe l’oeil chalk drawings since the mid-1990s.

Trompe l’oeil is an art technique using realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that two-dimensional objects are three dimensional. Julian’s chalk drawings are created using a projection called anamorphosis, which creates the illusion of three dimensions when viewed from the correct angle.

These technical explanations are lost on me. I am no closer to understanding how he creates his astonishing 3-D pavement drawings than I was when I first viewed them. Just trying to play 3-D checkers makes my brain hurt.

Julian also creates wall murals and fine art paintings.

Prepare to be amazed!

The illusion of the Politicians Meeting Their End was drawn outside The Bank of England in 1997

Spider-Man on a London street

Keep in mind that these drawings only work from one viewpoint; otherwise the image appears strangely distorted. Two examples:

Here are frontal and side views of Julian's 40-foot-long "Make Poverty History" drawing in Edinburgh City Center

Here is Julian's "Swimming Pool" drawing in Glasgow, Scotland viewed from the right side and the wrong side

Holy illusion, Batman!

Anyone got a harpoon?

"Meeting Madame Butterfly" was drawn in Mexico City

Drawing on Prince's Street in Glasgow, Scotland

Dungeons and draggings

Celebrating the U.S.A.

This Eiffel Tower drawing was created in—shocker!–Paris

"Meeting Mr. Frog"

"Little and Large"

"About to Meet Mr. Newt"

"White Water Rafting"

"Placing the Orders" was published in 'The Daily Mail" on Christmas Eve 2007

"Making Mr. Snowman" appeared in 'The Daily Mail" on December 22, 2008

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
