Spare No Effort of Your Wings

Last week, I had a nice Skype video-conversation with Jackie Rose Helpern, a friend I had met through Twitter. I was very impressed when she said that when she decides to do something, whether it’s a trip to Antarctica or spending a semester in the Philippines, it never occurs to her that she won’t be able to do it.

I’ve always felt the same way. Years ago, when I wanted to be a writer, I just assumed that I would eventually get there. Unfortunately, I was pretty clueless and had no plan. But even though I screwed up time and time again, I did eventually get to where I wanted to go.

I can’t imagine living any other way. When life calls me, I follow wherever it leads me. I love encouraging other people to pursue their dreams, too. So I was very happy to hear Jackie Rose speak with such confidence about trusting her intuition and enthusiastically embarking on one adventure after another.

The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.
Ayn Rand

What especially impressed me is that Jackie Rose is only twenty-four years old. Too many people learn too late, if they ever learn at all, that life is an adventure waiting to be seized.

After this post was published, Jackie Rose sent me an e-mail, which included this:

You nailed it. Above all else, it just doesn’t occur to me that I won’t be able to do something. Sure, I may have to move things around (I want to adopt a child but now is not the right time), and I may have to change my goals once I get further in if I realize that my expectations and reality are dissimilar, but the key is to keep going. Don’t see mistakes as failure. Look for things to be positive about, not the opposite. To stay positive with myself, I focus on feeling strong when I finish a run, accomplished when I complete a project for work, smart when I answer a question in class, etc.

Way to go, Jackie Rose! May you travel the world and live the life you were born to live!

Travelers, it is late. Life’s sun is going to set. During these brief days that you have strength, be quick and spare no effort of your wings.

The indomitable Jackie Rose Helpern

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

sixty-seconds-coverPhil is also the author of Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, a collection of 45 inspiring, life-changing stories from prominent authors and thought leaders he interviewed. The roster of storytellers includes Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsch, Caroline Myss, Larry Dossey, Rachel Naomi Remen, Bernie Siegel, Dean Ornish, and Christiane Northrup. Sixty Seconds has been translated into four languages: Italian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. Reading this book is like spending a few minutes face to face with each of the contributors and listening to their personal stories.

Phil, Jackie’s an impressive woman – young or otherwise. It’s funny, but just when I needed inspiration to make some difficult life changes, two amazing young women (the same age) have presented themselves in my life. One I know and one I’ve just encountered here thanks to your post about Jackie. I am 57-years-old and I look to the Universe to show me the gifts that are right in front of me. Thank you, Phil and Jackie.

  8. Phil Bolsta Says:

Best of luck, Kate. I too applaud people like Jackie who inspire others simply by living their lives. One of my favorite affirmations is “The best gift I can give others is the example of my own life working.”
