Practice being silent and peaceful every day. Early morning, before your mind kicks into high gear, is an ideal time for stillness.
Silence is as full of potential wisdom and wit as the unhewn marble of great sculpture.
Begin by silently expressing love, devotion, and yearning, and allow yourself to be blanketed in God’s presence. Silently, with a pure heart, ask God questions about your life. Then be still and listen for the answers.
To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.
A mind distracted by random thoughts darting about like fireflies is unable to discern the silent but unmistakable voice of God.
Men cannot see their reflection in running water, but only in still water. Only that which is itself still can still the seekers of stillness. . . . If water derives lucidity from stillness, how much more the faculties of the mind? The mind of the sage, being in repose, becomes the mirror of the universe.
Longer periods of solitude—a weekend retreat, perhaps—can extend and expand your presence and enrich your self-knowledge.
Our language has wisely sensed the two sides of being alone. It has created the word loneliness to express the pain of being alone, and the word solitude to express the glory of being alone.
Wherever you find yourself, love and honor your solitude, and your solitude will love and honor you back.
But your solitude will be a home and a support for you, even in the midst of very unfamiliar circumstances, and from it you will find all your paths.
Rainer Maria Rilke
