Serving Through Love, Loving Through Service

During a break in a healing workshop yesterday, I gave a shoulder rub and face massage to a friend of mine. As I was working on her, I imagined I was applying healing energy and loving intention to her spirit during the darkest moments of her life. She had lost her husband under tragic circumstances at the hands of a corrupt political regime in her homeland, then later moved to America where she worked tirelessly to learn English and support her child, living in a state of perpetual anxiety and fear for the first few years. I cannot even begin to comprehend the magnitude of the hardships she endured. But what I could do was offer a bit of loving kindness for a few minutes.

We can all do this. In fact, we do this all the time. When we send up a prayer for someone, when we send loving energy to a friend in need, it immediately goes to where it is needed most. Because consciousness is nonlocal, which means it is everywhere in space and time, loving intentions are received instantaneously and some measure of spiritual healing always  occurs.

Granted, the term “loving energy” is imprecise, for mental and spiritual energy operate beyond the scope of what science can measure. However, given that we can reach and affect each other through the complex web of divine energy we call the universe, the word “energy” can be considered a metaphor for the instantaneous effect of compassionate human intention.

Scores of experiments have verified that our thoughts and prayers do have an impact at a distance, but without the transfer of any known form of physical energy. Because mind and consciousness are nonlocal, which means they’re everywhere in space and time, there’s no reason for anything to go anywhere or for anything to be sent because it’s already there.
Dr. Larry Dossey

Last night after the seminar, I gave a full-body massage to another friend. Right before beginning the massage, I was transfixed for a moment at the sensation that the room was being flooded with divine loving energy. She felt it too. Whatever the reason behind it, it was a wonderful gift. After the massage, she said something that startled me. “I felt completely loved the whole time, ” she said. “It felt like God was giving me a massage.” Let me stress that she was not personally associating me with God, but rather was impersonally equating the loving energy that was circulating around us and flowing through my hands with God’s love. Indeed, what she was feeling actually had nothing to do with me. When you resolve to be a vessel, a channel, an instrument of divine unconditional love,  you serve as a conduit for the inexhaustible love of God.

Again, you can do this too. We can all do it. All it requires is an authentic desire to serve God and be a source of love, peace and healing energy to others. The first step is to learn to come from your heart. As you evolve into an instrument of God’s love, your mere presence becomes an act of service.

I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.
Rabindranath Tagore

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

sixty-seconds-coverPhil is also the author of Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, a collection of 45 inspiring, life-changing stories from prominent authors and thought leaders he interviewed. The roster of storytellers includes Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsch, Caroline Myss, Larry Dossey, Rachel Naomi Remen, Bernie Siegel, Dean Ornish, and Christiane Northrup. Sixty Seconds has been translated into four languages: Italian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. Reading this book is like spending a few minutes face to face with each of the contributors and listening to their personal stories.

This has inspired me even more for a Reiki course I’ll be taking soon. :)

  2. Phil Bolsta Says:

Good luck with the Reiki, Serena! Here’s a cool experience i had in Reiki II:

  3. Serena Says:

I became interested in Reiki earlier this year with the intention of helping my sick dog. I knew his end was near but wanted to do more for him to be more comfortable. I took Reiki I in March and plan to take Reiki II next month. After reading about your experience in Reiki II, I’m counting the days for my course!

  4. Phil Bolsta Says:

Hope your experience in Reiki II is a memorable one too, Serena!

  5. Carol Niemi Says:

Right on, Phil! I also ask to be a conduit and portal of Divine Energy as I give massage and it truly transforms the experience from one of physical manipulation to “wholistic” healing. Being in a place of humble service, knowing “of myself I can do nothing” creates an energetic container where miracles occur. The massage then becomes mutually healing as giving and receiving are one in truth. Yes, it’s all about Love.

    Love and Light ~ Carol

  6. Phil Bolsta Says:

That’s the secret to wonderful bodywork, Carol. How often have you heard a practitioner say that they feel drained after a session, or that they’ve taken on the client’s “bad energy”?

It’s easy to see why. When you draw solely on your own reservoir of love while engaging others, you run the risk of exhausting your resources and feeling washed-out and spent.

The solution? Resolve to be a vessel, a channel, an instrument of God’s pure, inexhaustible love. Then, instead of depleting your own limited reserves, you will be serving as a conduit for the deep love of God, which will heal and energize you as well—in body, mind, and spirit.

After all, human love is limited, divine love is limitless. Tap into your Source energy and you will feel exhilarated instead of exhausted!
