My Interview With Al Jarreau

Singer Al Jarreau

In early 2001, I received an assignment from Minnesota Monthly magazine: Interview famous people and ask what they like about Minnesota. It was a fun story to work on! Here is my audio interview with five-time Grammy winner Al Jarreau and the resulting story that was printed in the May 2001 issue. Al knew Minnesota well, referencing everything from Minnesota’s industrial base to the finer points of state culture.

Jarreau, a Milwaukee native, has earned five Grammy awards in the jazz, pop, and R&B categories. In early March, he performed with the Minnesota Orchestra at Orchestra Hall.

I have a special affinity for Minneapolis. It began with a short visit in 1969 that turned into a stay of about eight to 10 months. It involved the forming of a band in the area and the making of lots of friends who continue to be friends today. I’m constantly discovering new things about Minnesota and its progressive attitude. The fact that Bobby McFerrin was invited to be the conductor of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra is really innovative. There’s such an intellectual openness and curiosity and willingness to be out front and leading the way. And Jesse Ventura fits right in with that. While live music clubs are on the demise in the rest of the country and the world, there continues to be an active live music scene in Minneapolis that’s still growing. I’m just so in love with that kind of openness and avant-garde spirit. I sneaked into Minneapolis [a couple weeks before performing with the Minnesota Orchestra] for a couple of days to see my brother, who lives in St. Paul, and to work with Ricky and Paul Peterson to write some new music for a new album project. We’ve got a great start on a couple pieces of music.

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

sixty-seconds-coverPhil is also the author of Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, a collection of 45 inspiring, life-changing stories from prominent authors and thought leaders he interviewed.
