Who’s Stopping You From Living Your Dream? You Are.

That's me on the Trego Nature Trail in Wisconsin, where I decided to make my move

Eleven weeks ago, during a walk in the woods, I made a decision: I would leave Minnesota, the only home I’d ever known, and move to California. I had wanted to move for years, but the quicksand of inertia and fear of the unknown had held me fast. Staying where I was, no matter how much I wanted to be elsewhere, was easier. Most importantly, my daughter and mother were in Minnesota and I couldn’t imagine living so far away from them.

Now that I’ve made the move and am happily ensconced in Encinitas, my favorite place on earth, everything feels right. I’m exactly where I should be, and Skype video enables me to see my family members at any time. Skype is like the Jetsons’ picture phone come to life. It’s free, it’s amazing, and did I mention it’s free?

So many people have told me that they envy me for changing my life so dramatically and embarking on such a great adventure. Guess what? You can snap your fingers right this minute and change your life in whatever way you’d like. You can do whatever you want to do in this life. Literally.

If you want to hop on a plane tomorrow and move to Argentina, you can.

If you want to quit your job and be a yoga teacher in the Ozarks, you can.

If you want to leave a relationship and hitchhike across Europe, you can.

It may not be easy, it may not be practical, you may encounter resistance from all quarters, but that is the nature of dreams.

Pack a suitcase and get going!

Yes, if you have family and work obligations like I once had, your decision will be far more complicated than mine. But if you and your spouse want to move, your kids will adapt, especially if you proceed with joy and optimism. If you want to stay where you are but change careers, your family may me more willing than you think to scale back, live simply and support your dream.

You don’t have to fight to live as you wish. Live as you wish and pay whatever price is required.
Richard Bach

Fast-forward ten, twenty, thirty years or more and look back at your life today. If your future self is at peace with how you’re living today, terrific. But if not, make a decision, plan as best you can, then let the circumstances take care of themselves. Trust that the force that created the stars is guiding your journey as well.

There is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.
W. H. Murray

Life does not come with guarantees. Oops, I take that back. If you follow your heart, you are indeed guaranteed to have an adventurous life. Sure, the cost to change your life right now may be high, but it’s chump change compared to the price you’re paying in terms of your emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being to stay put.

On your deathbed, are you going to regret that you led a dull, uneventful, predictable life? Or will you be at peace, grateful that you summoned the courage to follow your heart, chase your dreams and live a life without limits? Choose meaning. Choose purpose. Choose life.

And the trouble is, if you don’t risk anything, you risk even more.
Erica Jong

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

sixty-seconds-coverPhil is also the author of Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, a collection of 45 inspiring, life-changing stories from prominent authors and thought leaders he interviewed.
