The Only Obstacle Between You and Peace

"Encinitas Sunset" photographed by Christopher Gray

Just got back from a mile-long barefoot walk on the beach on a warm, sunny day in Encinitas. Funny how when the waves lap over your feet and then recede again how your heels drop deeper into the sand. Standing still as the water ebbed away, I felt like I was on a treadmill, moving backward, as if I were moonwalking without moving my feet. A little surreal, but a little cool too.

As the waves rolled in, I pulled my cap low to shield out the sun and gazed down the shoreline in both directions. Endless water. Pure blue sky. Cotton-candy clouds. I’ve been coming down to the ocean nearly every day for five weeks and I still can’t come close to drinking this all in. It’s all so overwhelmingly . . . majestic.

Soaking in this panoramic paradise, I thought how wonderful it would be if people could access the beauty of their inner world so easily. Some years back, I was sitting with someone close to me on a large rock, appreciating the sunset over the ocean. She had been battling depression, and found her time on the beach to be healing and reassuring. Yes, it’s easier to feel relaxed and closer to nature when we’re in the midst of one of Mother Nature’s masterpieces, but the challenge is to learn how to help our minds and spirits soar no matter where we find ourselves.

Beauty and joy are always as close to us as our next breath, yet so many people believe them to be light years beyond their reach. Allowing events in the external world to shape and define your internal world is an act of self-delusion that always leads to suffering.

Each one has to find his peace from within. And peace to be real must be unaffected by outside circumstances.
Mahatma Gandhi

Seek stability in that which is unstable and there will be no trace of your footprints on the path that leads to purpose and peace. The only obstacle between you and peace is the belief that there is an obstacle between you and peace.

Peace is our real nature. We spoil it. What is required is that we cease to spoil it. We are not going to create peace anew. There is space in a hall, for instance. We fill up the place with various articles. If we want space, all that we need do is remove all those articles, and we get space. Similarly if we remove all the rubbish, all the thoughts, from our minds, the peace will become manifest. That which is obstructing the peace has to be removed. Peace is the only reality.
