The Yolk’s On Me!

THE SET-UP: When my daughter, Erin, was small, we established a sacred tradition: whenever she wanted a hard-boiled egg, she would crack it open on my forehead. Needless to say, my forehead saw a lot of action in the days following Easter every year. It’s been years since we’ve lived together so I have carried on the tradition myself, thinking of her fondly every time I cracked an egg on my noggin.

THE STORY: On the way to the Portland, Oregon, airport yesterday after a two-week visit in Salem with my college pal, Geri, I took a hard-boiled egg from my baggie of four such eggs, cracked it on my forehead, then held it in the baggie to peel it.

It was not hard-boiled.

I had hard-boiled a dozen eggs at Geri’s and placed them back in their carton. But Geri had a second carton of a few eggs that were waiting to be scrambled or fried. When I had opened my carton to retrieve the three hard-boiled eggs that remained, I was surprised to see that there were four. I thought that was rather strange but was hurrying to get ready and didn’t follow up on that observation. I see now that Geri must have switched the location of the cartons in the fridge while putting away leftovers from the night before.

Thankfully, I did not end up with egg yolk dripping off my forehead and onto my shirt. I am also glad that I did not try to peel the egg over a napkin in my lap. I simply sealed the baggie and handed it to Geri, who stopped off at her step-daughter’s on the way back from the airport for some mother-daughter bonding over scrambled eggs.

The moral is clear: Listen to your intuition or you could wind up with egg on your face.

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

sixty-seconds-coverPhil is also the author of Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, a collection of 45 inspiring, life-changing stories from prominent authors and thought leaders he interviewed. The roster of storytellers includes Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsch, Caroline Myss, Larry Dossey, Rachel Naomi Remen, Bernie Siegel, Dean Ornish, and Christiane Northrup. Sixty Seconds has been translated into four languages: Italian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. Reading this book is like spending a few minutes face to face with each of the contributors and listening to their personal stories.

  1. M.D. Senseng Says:

The moral is clear: If you are not sure, test the egg. Spin the egg. If it spin freely without wobbles, it is hard boiled.

  2. Phil Bolsta Says:

Hmmm, haven’t heard about the spin method. Sounds like it came from a Leonardo DiCaprio movie!
