An Axe to Grind

How you see a person is not necessarily who they really are. Your assessment is biased by your fears, judgments, feelings and expectations. Lao Tuz, the Father of Taoism, expressed this truth beautifully:

Once upon a time a man whose axe was missing suspected his neighbor’s son.

The boy walked like a thief, looked like a thief, and spoke like a thief.

But, the man found his axe while digging in the valley, and the next time he saw his neighbor’s son, the boy walked, looked, and spoke like any other child.

Perhaps you have an axe to grind with someone; perhaps you think they treated you poorly; perhaps they owe you money or simply made a comment you didn’t care for. Challenge yourself to set aside your preconceived notions and see that person as if you were meeting them for the first time. You ma be surprised to discover that not only are they a better human being than you gave them credit for, but so are you.
