How Are You?

The next time somebody you don’t know mechanically asks in passing, “How are you?”, forgo the typical, “Fine” or “Great.” Instead, boldly and happily exclaim:

Joyful and triumphant!

Spectacular, rapidly approaching ecstatic!

Not only will the other person smile or laugh, they are sure to drop their guard and respond in a friendly way. Now, instead of two ships passing anonymously by, you will have connected in a meaningful way with another fellow traveler, and you will both continue on your way with a smile in your heart and a skip in your step!

Of course, responding so cheerfully and positively also works well with people you already know. So go out there and give it a try! What have you got to lose, except your own timidity and self-limitations!

  1. Debra Schumacher Says:

Really good point, Phil. Personally, I’m trying to talk less “Minnesotan.” The common answer here is “not bad” or “can’t complain,” which of course could mean “not good” or “you could complain.” So, I’m trying to grow in this direction slowly, just minding my words and trying to speak in the positive. It’s going “pretty good!”

  2. Phil Bolsta Says:

Definitely a step in the right direction, Deb!

  3. almarose Says:

I love it! I also like those impromptu (relatively) “Free Hugs” campaigns you see on YouTube.

  4. Phil Bolsta Says:

*bows in gratitude, gives you a free cyber-hug*
