A Rash Decision

When you dedicate your life to service and to pleasing God, you may find that you can release resentments you’ve been gripping tightly to for years. Such was the case with my friend Judy, who was surprised and grateful when she discovered that she was able to feel compassion instead of contempt for her mother. Here is Judy’s story in her own words.

My Mom and I had never been close. In fact, there was so much tension between us that when I graduated from college I moved two thousand miles away. So her coming to see me in Denver was a “family get-together” that I dreaded for weeks leading up to her visit. Once she arrived at my little apartment, she slept in my bedroom while I camped out on the sofa. It was a miserable three days. As usual, she criticized me so often that by the end of her stay my ego felt completely eroded. I had lost every trace of self-esteem and self-confidence and felt draped in the drab cloak of depression that had blanketed my childhood.

Three days after my mother returned home, I became violently ill with intolerable night sweats, high fevers, and fatigue that had me sleeping fifteen hours a day. Just a few months after my mother’s visit, I heard from my sister that Mom was going to visit her in Sacramento. Given that I was feeling so lousy, I hoped my mother wouldn’t be leaving my sister in the same condition. Sure enough, after Mom left Sacramento, both she and my sister developed rashes. My mom’s rash was so severe that she ended up consulting with eight medical specialists over the next six months. She took all sorts of medications and used a number of topical remedies but could get no relief whatsoever.

One afternoon as I was thinking about my mom’s rash, a distinct, intuitive perception came to me: Could my mom’s rash be related to what had happened in our (very toxic) visit months earlier? This came as a clear heart thought, one that would not have occurred to me consciously. And it came with such power and force that it was more of a realization than a thought.

Feeling compassion for my Mom, I said out loud, “Lord, if this skin condition my mom is suffering has anything to do with me and what happened between us, I release her! I fully and freely forgive her for anything and everything seen and unseen between us. Lord, set her free. Heal her!” The next morning I phoned my mom. She had just gotten home after seeing a new doctor. He had immediately deduced the cause of her rash and prescribed the appropriate remedy. Within three days, her rash had disappeared.

After six months, my mother’s misery had ended with a prayer of release. And my heart’s ability to feel compassion for her and forgive her for a lifetime of mistreatment could only have come through God’s grace.
