After being handed the Grammy tonight for Album of the Year, Adele, who ended up with six Grammys on the night, said:
This record is inspired by something that is really no more, and everyone’s been through it: a rubbish relationship.
Adele’s trash-to-treasure turnaround may be more dramatic than yours or mine, but there’s a valuable lesson embedded in her words that apply to everyone. All of us can look back at any kind of painful loss and see now that it was a blessing in disguise. Romantic unions in particular are one of the most effective wisdom delivery systems.
Ultimately, just because a relationship ends does not mean that beginning it was a mistake. Whether you leave a relationship feeling relief or heartache, you are presented with a tremendous opportunity for growth and renewal, even when circumstances may suggest otherwise. Walk into your suffering and give it your full attention and it cannot help but give up its gifts.
Sometimes with one I love I fill myself with rage for fear I effuse unreturned love,
But now I think there is no unreturned love.
The pay is certain, one way or another.
(I loved a person ardently, and my love was not returned, Yet out of that I have written these songs.)
