A Friendly Flight

That’s me in the middle with the sport jacket and bowtie. Scott is the second one on the right. In between us is my sister, Cindy (now Cyn). Doesn’t every eight-year-old get suited up for his birthday?

Yesterday, I got to my airport gate for my San Diego-to-Minneapolis flight about an hour and a half before takeoff. There were only a few other people waiting at that point. I sat down, opened my laptop and chose the airport’s free wifi network. I opened my browser and saw that I wasn’t connected to the Internet. Restarting my computer didn’t help. That struck me as odd considering that a guy with gray hair and a visor sitting in the row across from me and five seats down was actively using his laptop.

Finally, I gave up and decided to go buy a bottle of water. I stopped in front of the visor guy and said, “Excuse me, are you connected to the Internet?” He looked up at me, and without hesitation, said, “Are you toying with me?” As he spoke, I was so startled that I physically flinched. “Scott!” I said. “Oh, my God!”

It was Scott Bakken, a very good friend I had grown up with who had lived two houses down from me. He had recognized me right away. I hadn’t seen his face until that moment because he had been looking down at his laptop the whole time.

It turns out that Scott was there with his wife, Cheryl, and oldest daughter, Taylor. They had just dropped off their younger daughter, Claire, at a San Diego-area college and were heading home to Minnesota. It was great to catch up with Scott. I sat down next to him and we had a good talk. By the way, yes, Scott had been connected to the Internet; he showed me the wifi network he was using.

I was smiling on the plane ride home. There’s something very comforting and reassuring about running into your childhood friend two thousand miles from home!

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents on Amazon.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
