Accepting the award onstage at the San Diego Book Awards (photo by Ronnie Fearon)
Tonight at the annual San Diego Book Awards event, my book, Through God’s Eyes: Finding Peace and Purpose in a Troubled World, won first place in the “Spiritual and Inspirational” category.
It was a fun evening. There were a couple hundred people in the auditorium and the format was like the Oscars. For each category, three finalists were announced and then the winner. Winners walked up onstage to collect their award and say a few words.
Here was my acceptance speech:
Through God’s Eyes is a comprehensive guide to living a spiritual life. I didn’t choose to write this book, it chose me. I’m sure many of the other writers here tonight can relate. Every minute I spent working on this book was a joy. You know you’re doing what you love to do and what you should be doing when even the drudgery part is a joy. It’s a joy to get this book out into the world and try to help people find more peace and purpose. Thank you for this honor.
It was also nice to meet other people who are involved in the San Diego writing community. All in all, it was a wonderful evening!

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.
Order it at GodIsLogical.com.
In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?
Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.

In your book, you state, “If you believe that God is not present within you, you go through life disconnected from the very essence that sustains you.” Do you believe then that Nathaniel Branden, an atheist, has gone through life “disconnected from the very essence that sustains him”? I don’t mean merely in periods of self-alienation that Branden has reported, but also the periods when he believed he was well-integrated and happy with what he was doing to further his ideas and promote psychological well-being.

You’re right, David. That statement in my book was too broad. What I meant by “disconnected” was “not consciously connected to,” which is not the same thing. So I’m revising the sentence in the book to read, “If you believe that God is not present within you, you are distancing yourself from the very essence that sustains you.” It’s a subtle revision but an important one. Thanks for pointing it out.
As for atheists who are happy, well adjusted and at the height of their powers, yes, they essentially are in harmony with whatever they define as the life force that flows through them. In their best moments, it becomes easy not to believe in or even think about God. The challenge comes in the bleak periods of self-alienation and despondency. Those who think they’re on their own in an unfriendly, unforgiving universe can all too easily lose hope that they will ever find their way out of the darkness that surrounds them.
