Your Old Life Is This Life

I’m reading the book, Hope Conquers All: Inspiring Stories of Love and Healing from CaringBridge, by Sona Mehring, the founder of CaringBridge. In the stories I’ve read so far, there’s a recurring theme. Here are just two examples:

Paula Coulter, who sustained serious injuries when her family’s van plunged off a collapsing freeway bridge, said, “Yes, I’m smiling. I’m here. I’m alive. But I would still give the world to have my old life back.” Mindy Fast, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma twelve years earlier, said, “Once upon a time I had a really nice life.”

How do you feel about your own life? Do you complain about what you don’t have and take what you do have for granted? Millions of people live that way. Yet if their lives changed in an instant like Paula’s and Mindy’s lives did, they would give everything they owned and then some to have their old lives back.

The life you’re living right now could be your “old life” tomorrow. How often do you stop and give thanks for all you have been blessed with? How consciously do you cherish the life you lead? Is it as precious to you today as it would be if it was lost to you tomorrow?

Challenge yourself to heighten your appreciation of all the gifts in your life. Look at your loved ones with fresh eyes. If this was their last day on earth, what would you wish you had said to them? What would you wish you had done with them. Say it now. Do it now. With kindness. With compassion. With love.

Live in such a way and love in such a way that the world will not be large enough to contain your gratitude.

To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven.
Johannes A. Gaertner

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents on Amazon.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
