The Secret to a Happy Kidhood

It’s funny how a seven-minute commercial made in Thaliand for Wacoal, a lingerie maker, can bring a tear to my eye and send me on a trip down Memory Lane. The young mother and her daughter (who is the second-cutest girl cub in the history of the world) remind me of my own childhood. I had a mom and dad who loved me unconditionally and always did special things for me.

My mom and me at Christmas

When I was seven, my mom bought me some packs of baseball cards to while away the time on a train ride to my grandparents’ home. I still remember my happiness in opening a pack and finding Orioles pitcher Steve Barber. My mom made me more cube-steak sandwiches and chocolate sodas and cut up more nectarines and hard-boiled eggs into “boats” for me than I can remember. Here’s a greeting card idea I sold years later that was inspired by my mom:

COVER: ‘M’ is for the many things you gave me . . .
INSIDE: ‘OTHER’ is for all the other kids who wished they had a Mom like you!

My dad turned our back yard into a baseball diamond by embedding a pitcher’s rubber and home plate (that he dug up from the field following the last home game of the original Saint Paul Saints minor league team at the old Midway Stadium in 1960). When he’d come home from work, I’d greet him with a bat and ball and three words: “Hit me some?” I don’t ever recall him saying no. On weekends, he’d tell me to get in the car and off we’d go. He had already tossed our golf clubs or bowling balls in the trunk but I wouldn’t know where we were going until we pulled up to the golf course or bowling alley.

I am who I am today because of my parents. Thank you, Mom and Dad. I have been truly blessed.

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents on Amazon.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
