As If We Had Known Him for Years

Sri Mrinalini Mata and Sri Daya Mata in India in 1961 (Fall 2014 issue of Self-Realization magazine)

In the Fall 2014 issue of Self-Realization magazine, Sri Mrinalini Mata, who is currently president of Self-Realization Fellowship, wrote of meeting Indian saint Sitaramdas Omkarnath in Puri, India in 1961. Here is how she describes the moment when she and then-SRF-president Sri Daya Mata met Omkarnath:

He greeted us so warmly, as if we had known him for years and were seeing him again after a long time of separation.

When I read this sentence, it jumped off the page and into my heart. I thought, Wouldn’t it be wonderful to meet everybody like this! And then I thought, From now on, that’s exactly what I’m going to do!

Think about it. Wouldn’t you like to be greeted like an old friend every time you met someone new? What a joy to connect with others like this! When you greet someone warmly you add unexpected joy to their day, but you also add joy to your own. It’s impossible to feel down or discouraged when you are acting as an ambassador of love and goodwill.

Starting right now, be somebody you would like to meet. Greet others with a warm, friendly smile as if you had known them for years and were seeing them again after a long time of separation.

Beginning today, treat everyone you meet, friend or foe, loved one or stranger, as if they were going to be dead at midnight. Extend to each person, no matter how trivial the contact, all the care and kindness and understanding and love that you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.
