The Delight of Detachment

January 27, 2011

Every spiritual teacher intones the same three-word mantra, “Detach from outcomes.” Perhaps you’ve recoiled at the thought. After all, who wants to go through life detached, like a ghost walking through a vibrant, festive party filled with laughter and all the delights this world has to offer?

Ah, but detaching from outcomes does not mean that you are apathetic and unmotivated. Quite the contrary. Detachment means that you (more…)

Serving Through Love, Loving Through Service

September 26, 2010

During a break in a healing workshop yesterday, I gave a shoulder rub and face massage to a friend of mine. As I was working on her, I imagined I was applying healing energy and loving intention to her spirit during the darkest moments of her life. She had lost her husband under tragic circumstances at the hands of a corrupt political regime in her homeland, then later moved to America where she worked tirelessly to learn English and support her child, living in a state of perpetual anxiety and fear for the first few years. I cannot even begin to comprehend the magnitude of the hardships she endured. But what I could do was offer a bit of loving kindness for a few minutes.

We can all do this. In fact, we do this all the time. When we (more…)

The Troubling of a Star

June 14, 2010

If God is guiding each of us with infinite wisdom and inexhaustible love, it follows that God is an organizing force bringing divine order to the universe, and that you are loved and supported no matter how you choose to exercise your free will.

There is a force of love present everywhere, and it can be trusted to bring your own life into order and peace.
Deepak Chopra

Every Act of Kindness Is Noticed By the Universe

May 15, 2010

As you evolve into an instrument of God’s love, your mere presence becomes an act of service.

In turn, every advance that we make in our awareness benefits unseen multitudes and strengthens the next step for others to follow. Every act of kindness is noticed by the universe and is preserved forever.
Dr. David R. Hawkins

Others will be divinely directed to cross your path so that your beacon of love can set their flickering lantern ablaze.

Thousands of candles can be (more…)

Reconnect to the Heartbeat of Humanity

May 14, 2010

How do you move from fear to love? Reaching out in service helps. When your storehouse of joy feels dark and empty, the simple act of helping another human being can magically replenish your inventory.

To complain that life has no joys while there is a single creature whom we can relieve by our bounty, assist by our counsels or enliven by our presence, is . . . just as rational as to die of thirst with the cup in our hands.
Thomas Fitzosborne

Assisting someone in need takes your mind off your own troubles and reconnects (more…)

Touching a Moment of Pure Love

May 9, 2010

Our attempts to love unconditionally are often sabotaged by our ego. Why? The ego’s dominance depends on the belief that we are separate from God. And what is God? Unconditional love. The nearer we get to God, the more desperate our ego becomes.

The reason that ego and love are not compatible comes down to this: you cannot take your ego into the unknown, where love wants to lead. If you follow love, your life will become uncertain, and the ego craves certainty.
Deepak Chopra

Human love is limited, divine love is limitless. When you draw solely on your own reservoir of love, you risk (more…)

As You Wish

April 16, 2009

black-and-white-surrender-to-godWhat is devotion? It is the unceasing practice of acknowledging God’s presence, with the ultimate goal of living your life as one long prayer.

Devotion requires complete immersion in divine love. In the Bhagavad Gita, Hinduism’s definitive guide to the science of self-realization, devotion is referred to as shraddha, the natural inclination of the heart quality to turn toward its Source in faith and surrender.

Surrendering means you recognize that whatever is, is. Accepting that you cannot change what cannot be changed enables you to deal with whatever is in front of you more objectively, free of judgment and emotional resistance.

The word “surrender” raises a red flag for some people, especially for those who believe that they can manipulate the universe to suit their own ends.

Attempting to exert control over every aspect of your life is like swimming upstream—progress is slow and difficult. When you surrender to divine will, you begin swimming with the current. You are in the flow, and life gets easier.

Surrendering to divine will does not mean you are sacrificing your free will. You (more…)

Good Night and Good Sleep!

January 4, 2009

woman-sleeping-glasses-on-bedEver notice how you don’t sleep as well when you go to bed with troubles on your mind? That’s a typical night for many of us—worrying about financial, job or relationship issues as soon as the light is switched off.

It recently dawned on me how to break this habit and drift off to sleep peacefully and joyfully, which naturally results in waking up well rested and energized!

What works for me might not work for you, but just in case it does, I wanted to share it with you.

A few days ago, I recalled the following parable: (more…)

Turning Adversaries Into Allies

August 6, 2008

coworkers-talking-smilingI loved my job but one of my coworkers didn’t like me much. I dreaded running into her—her disdain was almost palpable. But what bothered me more was knowing there was someone in the world whose mere presence made me tense.

Then it hit me. If I couldn’t change the way she felt about me, I would change the way I felt about her. I decided to change the energy between us by bathing her in love every time I saw her. The next time I encountered her in the hallway, I sent her loving energy from my heart and envisioned her surrounded by light and love.

Such a simple shift in perspective made a world of difference! Instead of dreading the sight of her, I now looked forward to seeing her! That constant source of tension disappeared and I was free to fearlessly roam the halls once again.

Did she treat me any differently? Hard to say. I do think her attitude softened a bit. The point was, her attitude no longer affected me. And on some level, I know without question that the loving energy I sent her way had a healing effect. After all, that’s what loving energy does.
