You Are But a Witness

April 12, 2011

True giving is an act of selfless service. The worthiness of the recipient and the consequences of your giving are not your concern.

You often say, “I would give, but only to the deserving.”
The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks in your pasture.
They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish.
Surely he who is worthy to receive his days and his nights, is worthy of all else from you.
And he who has deserved to drink from the ocean of life deserves to fill his cup from your little stream. . . .
For in truth it is life that gives unto life—while you, who deem yourself a giver, are but a witness.

The Gift Is to the Giver

April 6, 2011

Are you more comfortable giving than receiving? By definition, what is given must be received. Turn down a well-intentioned gift and you inadvertently break this circle of divine energy.

To receive a present handsomely and in a right spirit, even when you have none (more…)

GIve As the Rose Gives Perfume

April 4, 2011

Generosity is not confined to the sharing of material wealth. A generous spirit finds endless ways to express itself.

If you have much, give of your wealth; if you have little, give of your heart.
Arab proverb

Perhaps the most loving and meaningful gift you can give to another is (more…)

Chocolates at Christmas

December 26, 2010

A week ago, after the Sunday service at the Self-Realization Fellowship temple in Encinitas, my friend Laurie Baum was looking for two little chocolate-loving souls she knew from Sunday School who would appreciate the little transparent bags of Christmas goodies she had assembled to commit random acts of chocolate. Spotting their parents, she approached the family as they exited the temple. When Laurie offered the three-year-old boy a bag, he lit up like a Christmas tree. Accepting it joyfully, he raised (more…)

You’ve Gotta Give It to Get It!

January 7, 2010

Your every thought, word, and deed magnetically draws to you more of the same in even greater abundance. So, paradoxical as it may sound, the best way to get what you want is to give away what you’ve already got. The message you are sending to the universe when you give to others is, I have all of this I will ever need, for I have access to an endless supply of abundance. Like attracts like, so the universe responds by bringing you more of it.

To receive everything, one must open one’s hands and give.

John Harricharan

I like the example that John Harricharan offers in this interview on his website, Here is an edited excerpt from that interview:

Just as you couldn’t receive without giving, you cannot give without receiving If you give, you certainly will get back, because here’s this strange little thing. You can’t out-give the universe. You plunk a ten-dollar bill down for the universe and say, “Hey, you beat that,” and before you blink, there’s a hundred-dollar bill someplace.

People think that this is really impractical stuff. When they think so, I want to remind them that I’m a scientist, I’m an MBA guy, I’ve been through business, I talk to people at all levels of corporations, and the last time I checked, I wasn’t totally nuts. This (more…)

The Energetics of Giving

November 21, 2008

two-birds-sharingI received this insightful message from a friend the other day:

Isn’t it funny how when you ‘get’ something, it is so obvious you wonder how you ever missed it?  I recently found myself feeling a little miffed when I decided my niece wasn’t as appreciative (for a gift I had given her) as I thought I would be in her place.  Right after the negative thought, a shiny question popped into my head.  Am I helping her so that she’ll love me more?  Or am I helping her because I love her?  That got me back on track.

A wise observation. True giving has (more…)
