Cherish is the Word

carpe-diem-signI do not like wasting time. I want every minute of every day to be productive. No, don’t worry, I’m not a raging workaholic. Productive use of my time means anything from writing a blog post to reading a good book to spending time with friends and family to meditating to watching a favorite TV show to taking a much-needed nap. Balance is the operative word.

This is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good, but what I do today is important, because I am exchanging a day of my life for it! When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something that I have traded for it. I want it to be gain, and not loss; good, and not evil; success, and not failure; in order that I shall not regret the price I have paid for it.

Perhaps a better way to say this is that I don’t like marking time. I want my minutes and hours and days to count. I want every moment to be saturated with purpose. I don’t want an hour to go by without learning something, deepening a relationship, doing satisfying work or just enjoying a good laugh.

The days come and go like muffled and veiled figures sent from a distant friendly party, but they say nothing, and if we do not use the gifts they bring, they carry them as silently away.
