Philosophical Pablum

In his well-written, well-researched book, American Veda, which explores how India’s spiritual wisdom seeped into America’s cultural bloodstream, Philip Goldberg writes:

The St. Louis-born T. S. Eliot spent two years at Harvard studying Vedantic texts with America’s finest Indologists. Eliot, who learned Sanskrit and Pali (the language of the Buddha), once remarked that the subtleties of Indian sages “makes more of the great European philosophers look like schoolboys.”

I remember a spiritually awakened friend echoing the same sentiment. He told me that he had tried to read some famous philosophers of the last couple centuries and it was like reading nonsense written by children.

Thomas Moore

In Care of the Soul, Thomas Moore explained that the same dynamic holds true for psychology. In the Introduction, he wrote:

This book contains both psychological advice and spiritual guidance. A spiritual life of some kind is absolutely necessary for psychological “health.”

Three pages later, Moore added:

In the modern world we separate religion and psychology, spiritual practice and therapy. There is considerable interest in healing this split, but if it is going to be bridged, our very idea of what we are doing in our psychology has to be radically re-imagined. Psychology and spirituality need to be seen as one. In my view, this new paradigm suggests the end of psychology as we have known it altogether because it is essentially modern, secular, and ego-centered.

Goldberg concurs, noting in American Veda:

Instead of sick people in need of treatment, the transpersonalists saw clients as evolving souls with unlimited potential for growth. The hidden regions of the psyche contained untapped treasures, not just buried secrets and dark instincts. “I view psychological healing within the larger context of spiritual unfolding,” says Brant Cortright, a therapist who teaches at CIIS (California Institute of Integral Studies). “It is a movement from alienation or isolation to authenticity and greater connection . . . from darkness to light.” It is not a coincidence that Cortright’s language is reminiscent of the famous passage in the Upanishads: “Lead me from the unreal to the real. Lead me from darkness to light. Lead me from mortality to immortality.”

Moore, Goldberg and Cortright have nailed it. Psychologists who ignore the spiritual side of life can only take their clients so far. Depth of understanding of life requires knowledge and understanding of spiritual principles. Absent this understanding, it’s easy to think that life is unfair and doesn’t make any sense.

Phil’s eBook, The Logic of Living a Spiritual Life: Supporting a Life of Faith Through Logic and Reason, is now available for 99 cents.

Order it at GodIsLogical.com.

In this eBook, you’ll find answers to questions like:
• What is the cornerstone of a spiritual life, and why?
• What is the secret to liberating yourself from other people’s judgments and expectations?
• How do you reconcile the “free will vs. Divine Will” conundrum?
• Why is there an exception to “Everything happens for a reason”?

Those who worship logic instead of God are only half right. Not only is it logical to believe in God and to live a faith-based life, the existence of a loving, benevolent God that governs all creation is perhaps the only systematic worldview that explains every aspect of life.
